Dowdell used this land to build his home and barn on what would later become Dowdell Street which he named after himself and his wife Ann (Dowdell) Parkhurst (née Parkhurst). Other early settlers included John Kapp who purchased 640 acres (25 km²) north of present day South Milwaukee from Nicholas holder on July 2nd, 1840; Solomon Morse who bought 780 acres (30 km²) east of present day West Allis on December 12th, 1840; David Capps who purchased 560 acres (21 km²), southwest of present day Green Bay on February 9th, 1841; Amos Stowe who bought 160 acres (60 hectares), northeast of present day Sheboygan Falls on January 11th, 1845; George Ewing who located three miles northwest of town along State Road 54 on October 10th, 1846/47 as well as Robert Prentice who located two miles southwest off US Highway 8 between Sheboygan Falls and Green Bay on December 6th,. In 1850 only 3 out of 25 landowners had sold holdings totaling 1 millionacre(5000 ha). South Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis–Hofstra, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Milwaukee was founded on April 14, 1847 by Germans who had come overland from Germany to work on the new rapid-transit line between Green Bay and Chicago. The original settlement site was on Lake Michigan near present-day downtown South Milwaukee. The first sawmill in town was built about 1840 by John Heininger and his brother Gottlieb Heininger, both residents of Milwaukie, Oregon Territory (now southeastern Portland, Oregon). By 1847 there were six mills in town; three belonged to German immigrants while three were owned by Englishmen who had brought over their families during the American Revolution. The German immigrants started out as tenant farmers but soon became successful manufacturers of agricultural implements and other products including shoes and boots for army recruits during the American Civil War. They also established a grocery store and bakery before moving upmarket into lumbering and manufacturing thereafter. In 1865 when Wisconsin became a free state following its admission into the Union, two white men named Pemberton and Higgins bought what would become known as "The Diamond Mill", located just east of downtown South Milwaukee on Menomonee River Road (now US 31). This mill produced flour for local bakeries until it closed in 1902 because of competition from larger mills in Illinois and Minnesota. In 1916 Jürgen Dreyfus opened what would be called "Dreifuss's" department store at First National Bank Plaza which quickly became one of South Milwaukee's most popular commercial destinations with its large variety of items including groceries, clothing, automobiles and jewelry after becoming available through mail order from elsewhere in America via Dreyfus's own company network or through connections with other merchants throughout northern Wisconsin who acted as middlemen.) After World War II North Korea made an international visit to South Milwaukee where they stopped at Dreifuss's store before continuing their journey northwards across Canada to China where they sold refrigerators imported from that country! Since 2000 various businesses have opened up around First National Bank Plaza such as FreshDirect by OWN3D LLC which specializes in fresh produce; TrueGreens Gourmet Markets - a full service gourmet grocery chain open since early 2019 featuring more than 30 stores statewide; African Americans Owned Businesses Inc., now known as African Americanownedexpressions inc.; KFCCorp owns several plaza locations acrossWI selling mostly fast food but also contains an extensive wine collection; Live Nation Entertainment has been operating some plaza locations intermittently hosting live concerts since 2007)
South Milwaukee was first settled in 1836 by the Potawatomi. The area became a part of the United States in 1845 when it was bought from France by General John C. Fremont. The town was named for General Fremont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. In the early 1900s, South Milwaukee supported a large population of Polish immigrants. Many of these Poles worked as farmers or mechanics. In 1916, when World War I began, many Poles took up arms to help their countrymen fight against Austria-Hungary. Some also volunteered with the U.S. military during World War I. The town's largest industry until the 1960s was farming; today it is largely dominated by manufacturing and service businesses such as food processing and retailing
