Shorewood, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,803 at the 2010 census. Shorewood is located on the Fox River and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. It is bordered by the cities of Milwaukee and Wauwatosa to the west, Kenosha to the north, Racine to the east, and Brown Deer to the south. The first people to live in what is now Shorewood were Dutch immigrants who came overland from Holland in 1652. They built a log cabin near where present-day Shorewood Park sits on land that they had acquired from their Indian neighbors. In 1836, an act of Congress designated this small town as a port for goods coming downriver from Superior and other points south. That same year saw another important event when John Dickey settled here with his family and began developing what would become Dickey's Brewery which still remains in operation today as one of Milwaukee's most iconic businesses. In 1870, Gouverneur Morris purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along both sides of the Fox River from Nicholas de la Peña for $15 million dollars. This purchase represented one of history's biggest land acquisitions ever made and it allowed Morris to build one of America's largest river ports – something he availed himself of greatly during his term as US President (1877-81). Morris also used his investments in shoreline development to bring new life to what was then rural farmland; today much of that acreage has been developed into mixed use areas including shopping malls and office parks catering to locals and visitors alike. By 1898 there were only 375 residents living within five miles (8 kilometers) of downtown Milwaukee; however by 1916 there were more than 6,000 people working downtown including many merchants who had opened their businesses during prohibition years when alcohol was not legal under US law. By 1978 Shorewood had grown rapidly enough that it became its own incorporated municipality with a vibrant economy based largely upon manufacturing – a trend which continues today with industry continuing to play an increasingly important role inshoretowns around the world During World War II shorefront development continued apace with rapid construction on both naval dockyards adjacent to downtownMilwaukee as well as expansions inland towards Wausau Avenue making way for thousands of housing units which would eventually be annexed into Shorewood despite protests by some local businessmen who felt they should have retained control over their community . In 1948 after years Of work by Mayor Harry Weinbaum SHOREWOOD became Incorporated A Government Entity And Became A Model Town After Being Oriented Toward Federal Government Officials Who Felt That Incorporation Would Encourage Enterprise And Innovation Within The Community While Preservationists Wanted To Keep The Community As Is . Today There Are Over 40000 Residents Living InSHOREWWOOD Which Makes IT ONE OF THE LARGEST AND DEMographically STERNEST COMMUNITIES IN MILWAUKEE
The town of Shorewood, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by volunteers from the nearby village of Milwaukee. The town was named for General John Shore, who led an expedition against the Sioux in 1846. The first post office was established in 1856, and the first store opened in 1861. By 1870, Shorewood had a population of just over 100 people. In 1875, the railroad arrived in Shorewood, making it easier to get around. The town quickly became known for its manufacturing businesses and its large number of barns and other buildings used for storage. In 1899, Shorewood voters approved a $5 million budget to build a school and park. The new school was built on land that had been donated by J.P. Morgan. It is now known as the John Fetterman Schoolhouse Museum
