Shorewood is a town in the southern Wisconsin county of Dane. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Shorewood was first settled by European Americans in 1836 as part of the Black Hawk War conflict between American Indian and white settlers. In 1855, the town was organized as an independent city, and until 1959 it functioned as a rural community. In 1934, with passage of the National Firearms Act (NFA), gun targets began to be legally sold in Shorewood. At that time, target shooting associations were not common in America; handguns were typically considered personal property rather than something that could be legitimately possessed for sport or recreation. However, with increased access to firearms and magazines through NFA regulation, Target Shooting Club became one of the earliest operators of what would become known as “gun clubs” around the country. Today,Target Shooting Club remains an important part of Shorewood’s community spirit and culture- both through its members own clubhouses which are open to all residents for target practice purposes and also through hosting monthly events at various locations throughout town which include tournaments for children aged 8 years old and older as well as adult matches for those who wish to participate(most recently held at Dells sporting goods store). Shorewood has been inhabited by people since at least 1000 AD. The first permanent European settlers were Dutch traders who established a trading post in what is now Shorewood in 1670. In 1836, the first permanent U.S. settlement was made here when Captain John Leland decided to move his family from New York City to what is now Milwaukee County after experiencing poverty and disease in New York City. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living inshore villages on both sides of the river; however, because of navigation problems caused by the presence of Lake Michigan and rapids on the Fox River, these settlements failed to gain much popularity beyond their respective shores until 1852 when Congress passed an act authorizing Fort Dearborn to be built along Ohio Street (then known as North Water Street) between Wauwatosa and Green Bay in order to provide better shipping lanes for goods entering and leaving Illinois through Lake Michigan. In 1885, during a time when railroads were developing throughout Midwest America, Shorewood became one of several towns along with Racine and Kenosha to receive a railroad station - this Station opened up many new opportunities for villagers who would formerly have relied upon water transportation for their goods or visited nearby cities only for pint-sized visits during summer months In 1898-1900 two important events took place within Shorewood: One was that Mayor Hiram Houghton dedicated a new cemetery which included burials of notable citizens such as Judge Augustus Bemis; secondly it marked the end of years long drought that had ravaged much of Northwestern Wisconsin following heavy rains earlier that year During World War II Naval Intelligence Officer USS "Pensacola" used shoreline facilities nearshore including an airfield adjacent to today's high school complex as its main base ashore providing intelligence support for naval operations off shore
