Shorewood is a small town in south-central Wisconsin. The population was 1,417 at the 2010 census. Shorewood is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and became a town in 1892. It is named after John Shore, who donated land for the town. The first settlers to what is now Shorewood were farmers who arrived in 1837. By 1840, the area had become a small village and was known as "New Brighton." In 1852, via an act of Congress, Shorewood became part of the new state of Wisconsin. The next year saw the opening of a post office inshore from what is now downtown Shorewood. In 1872, John Atherton built his home on what today is Main Street in what was then northeast corner of town limits. He soon started selling liquor to local residents and becoming known as "the palatial barber." In 1886, he sold his business to C H Friesen and it continued operation under that name until 1951 when it switched its name to Friesen's Bar & Grill which still operates today. In 1922, George Grote founded Grote Printworks on land that now houses both Friesen's Bar & Grill and nearby retail store Grote's Hardware Store. At this time also, Shorewood had its first school - Washington Elementary School - which served children from east side streets such as Elm Street and Atlantic Avenue. In 1949, during America's involvement in World War II, Shorewood-area servicemen brought their families over for three weeks for vacation during Christmas week before returning home to start their own lives back at home again (a practice called "Operation Homecoming"). During this time many businesses closed because so much people were mobilized; however some reopened including Friesen's Bar & Grill which reopened with American soldiers from all over Europe staying there while their families returned home). On July 3rd 1948 two large fires destroyed most of shoreWood leaving only about 75%of buildings standing thanks largely to volunteer firefighter work (this fire would be made into one of television commercials featuring firefighters). During the early 1950sshoreWood experienced rapid growth due to transplanted middle class Germans moving into town due primarily to jobs available at Boeing Airplanes plants nearby (the company relocated its operations from Milwaukee County) making way for newly arrived Americans including many high school graduates seeking better opportunities than they could find back home (one famous resident example being teenager Mitch Albom who started working at KFC where he would later become president). Many homes were built just north/south along First Avenue between Superior Boulevard and Wabash Avenue with few if any consequences resulting other than increased traffic congestion on these streets during weekday morning rush hours caused by all those people coming out shopping; however this prosperity did not last long as within 5 years or so much newer housing had replaced older homes thereby eliminating most of the traffic congestion problem). With little opportunity for advancement beyond low paying employment or no college degrees many young people leftshoreWood throughout the 1960s looking for greener pastures elsewhere while others opted not to move away altogether but stayed put hoping something would change Eventually change came when Mayor Glen Sill announced plans for demolition of most old structures within Town Limits necessitating more parking lot construction creating gridlock backups each morning during peak hours causing inconvenience rather than convenience or pleasure
The town of Shorewood was founded in 1868 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. It became a city in 1959.
