Shorewood is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Shorewood is located on the east side of Milwaukee and across the river from Waukesha. It is bordered by Waukesha to the north, Racine to the west, Ashland to the south and Menomonee Falls to the east. The first European settlers in what is now Shorewood arrived in 1838 and named it after their hometown of Sunderland in England. They were led by John Prentice who purchased 6 acres (2 ha) of land near present-day Shorewood from Jacob Weiser. In 1845, Prentice donated another parcel of land to make up for a "misunderstanding" he had with Weiser about paying him for his share of Weiser's estate instead of receiving money as agreed upon. The town was platted in 1846 when residents voted on a location for a courthouse and school district. In 1855, shorewood built its first schoolhouse which still stands today along with many other civic buildings including: a store/ hotel/ post office building that still stands today; an agricultural fairgrounds; two churches – one Congregationalist and one Roman Catholic; two stores; three blacksmiths; one wagon factory; four farmhouses; five residences – three frame houses and two brick houses – all dating from before 1900; and six gravesites nearby marking those who died while living or working in shorewood during that time period. In 1912, bank robber Jens Rasmussen came through town on his way to prison where he planned to rob several banks before reaching Chicago extradition papers were ready so he could be taken back into America where he would have committed murder. When law enforcement stopped Rasmussen near his home on State Street they found $5 000 cash hidden inside his car trunk along with ammunition and a .22 caliber rifle! This was also the first time anyone had been caught fleeing justice using a stolen car! Ulysses S Grant Park was created adjacent to State Road 9A just north ofshoreline in 1924 when piecemeal donations totaling $233 were collected by Mayor James Miele over six days starting on May 24th followed by public meetings which resulted in selection of an outline for park boundaries based upon distances between various homes within town limits as well as sites deemed most promising for athletic fields etcetera Inaugurated by Mayor Miele on July 10th 1925 (the day after Labor Day), Ulysses S Grant Park contained 2 million square feet (209 hectares) comprising twenty-six baseball diamonds (eighteen played host each year until 1957), fifteen tennis courts (ten hosted each year until 1958), twelve swimming pools (eighteen hosts each year until 1957), twelve country clubs - twelve hosting annual tournaments until 1978 inclusive - five libraries - three opened during our early years - oneopened during World War II - One opened recently as partSnyder Recreation Center

In 1907, Shorewood established a school system that still operates today. The town has since experienced modest growth, with only 1,500 residents in 2000. Despite this lack of recent growth, Shorewood has managed to retain some cultural significance. For example, the town's annual Shakespeare Festival is one of Wisconsin's most popular tourist attractions.
In 1836, the area that is now Shorewood was part of the Town of Washington. The town was organized on December 5, 1836, from parts of the towns of Green Bay and Fox Point. On February 7, 1840, Washington became a city.shorewood's first school opened in 1839. In 1850, shorewood had a population of about seventy-five people. In 1862, Shorewood incorporated as a village under the name "Shorewood." On May 1st 1870, Shorewood became a town when it ratified an Act of the Wisconsin State Legislature which granted certain benefits to towns with more than one thousand residents. During World War II most of what is now Shorewood was within the boundaries of Navy Pier Naval Base which housed up to forty-six thousand people and employed over two hundred workers who constructed or repaired naval vessels including USS Lexington (CV-8), USS Constitution (NX-74), USS Somers (SSN-521) and many others. At its peak in 1945 there were over one hundred thousand military personnel at Navy Pier Naval Base and it served as both an airbase for bombers during World War II as well as a center for shipbuilding operations during peacetime periods until it closed in 1992 following the end of the Cold War
