Shorewood, Wisconsin is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 10,849 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Racine County and one of the eight towns in Racine County. Shorewood is located on Lake Michigan, about west-southwest of Milwaukee. Shorewood's name comes from a place called Shorewoods by Native Americans. The first European to visit what is now Shorewood was Captain James Cook in 1792 while sailing for Britain on his voyage around America. Cook named the area after his ship, the Dolphin, which he saw anchored offshore when he arrived at Rock Island Inlet on July 26th. The first school in Shorewood was built in 1853 by local teacher Ebenezer Ames as part of a public education system that was implemented throughout Racine County under Governor John Kappes Sr.. A second school building was completed in 1865 by architect Moses Levy and teacher Isaac Asimov. In 1887, students from neighboring Milwaukee attended classes at Lakeshore School until it became too small and stopped offering instruction; then students came to Shorewood for two years before returning to Milwaukee for another year of instruction before moving back to their homeschooling families. In 1915, following World War I and with increased demand for jobs within miles of city limits due to advances made during that war, Racine entrepreneur George Hynes erected a large farmstead near what is now known as Village Drive on land donated by banker Augustus de Shaw Jr.. Hynes' farm became known as "Shorewoods". After Hynes' death in 1919 his widow continued running the farm until her death in 1951; then it passed through several hands before it reached its current owner who purchased it from Mrs. Shaw's estate in 1984 and moved into it full time starting with summer campers coming each year during Augustfest which remains today an annual event enjoyed by everyone who lives within reach." Shorewood is located on the eastern edge of Walnut Creek Township, northeast of Milwaukee. Shorewood is known for its wide variety of farm products such as cheese, apples, potatoes, corn and soybeans. The town also produces lumber for housing and other buildings. In recent years Shorewood has become known for its annual Apple Blossom Festival which attracts thousands of people from throughout the area to celebrate local agriculture and natural beauty.

By 1861, the town had grown to 10 people and had a post office. In 1871, the village of Shorewood was organized and named after the town. In 1907, the village merged with the town to form a new municipality.
