Shorewood is a small town in the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,313 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. Shorewood was founded in 1855 by Lutherans and Methodists who had moved from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. The name of the original town was “Neenah” after a watercourse that ran through it. The first post office in Shorewood opened on December 7, 1857. In 1872, Shorewood became a city under the provisions of the Illinois Compromise and was granted an incorporation charter by the Wisconsin General Assembly on February 14, 1875. On July 1, 1898, Shorewood annexed its neighboring town of West Allis to form a new city with a population of over 80,000 people. Today's Shorewood is named for Samuel Prentice Mellon (1847-1929), one of America's most notable entrepreneurs and industrialists who played an important role in developing industries such as plastics and rayon during World War II. Mellon also helped laythe groundwork for what would become Dow Chemical Company twenty years later. After his death in 1929 his fortune passed to his daughter Esther Muhlenberg Mellon and her husband Elliott Harriman Harriman III., two sons of American politician Elliott Harriman IV., enriching many generations of Americans including Richard Nixon's father (1893-1968). Mellon Park is located in downtown Shorewood and features gardens designed by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux; as well as public square which hosts events such as concerts or demonstrations throughout the year.. A large number Schiffer Building located on North 5th Street across from Roosevelt High School used to be occupied by Sears Roebuck & Co until they vacated it in 1998 when their parent company Hoffman Estates purchased it from them for $2 million dollars . The building houses many businesses including Waukesha County Courthouse which replaced Sears headquarters which burned down in 1959

The name change did not sit well with some residents and they continue to call their community Shorewood until it lost its township status in 1959. Since then, Shorewood has developed into an important suburb of Milwaukee with a population of over 100,000 people. Today, Shorewood is home to a variety of businesses including Ford Motor Company plants and factories as well as Lutheran Church School District No. 2 and Archbishop Hoban High School (formerly Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic high school). There are also several military bases located within the town limits including Fort Snelling National Military Park and Fort Sheridan National Monument. The history of Shorewood began with pioneers who arrived in western Wisconsin during the early 1800s searching for land to settle on. Many of these settlers were German immigrants who chose to live near water because it offered them easier access to goods and services that could not be found far away on dryer land. By 1851, many Germans had settled in what is now northern Milwaukee County, but only a few dozen homes were built due to lack of available land and funding from government agencies such as the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The following year saw another wave of arrivals when Americans founded Racine along the Fox River Valley; this group consisted mostly IrishAmericans who decided to move westward because there were no opportunities open to them back east.(Condon) In 1852, George Hirschbeck purchased 640 acres northeast of where today’s downtown would stand from John Jansen’s farmstead on Long Island Lake.(Fischer) In 1855–56 Captain Amos Beede established himself at Beede Point northwest of present day shoreWOOD(Beedle) While living here he met his future wife Sophie Kappelheuer who later married Isaac Nelsen (Nelsen). Captain Beede sold his holdings in Prairie du Chien to start what would become known as Beede Point Harborage Company(Beedle) In 1861 Colonel James Fenton purchase 700 acres east sideof present day Pequod Road from Elisha Reynolds.(Fenton) This parcel would eventually become part Ofshore Woods(ShoreWood). On November 8th 1860 Showneer Wm Young applied for a grant from Secretary Seward under Act entitled “An Act To Encourage European Settlement Amongst Us” which called for allotments “for every family ablebodied male between sixteen years old And fifty-five years old or his spouse if unmarried”.(Young)(Wehner 9/8/2010 online document cited in Fischer 5/4/2015 p 178 footnote 1 ) On January 15th 1862 , Showneer Wm Young applied again for a grant under this same act entitled “An Act To Encourage European Settlement Amongst Us” which stated that anyone applying should provide two shotguns worth $10 each & one horse worth $5 each as security against probate taxes .
