It will also create new jobs and improve transportation options for residents in both neighborhoods! Shorewood is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the west side of the Mississippi River. The population was 5,049 at the 2010 census. Shorewood is included in the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Shorewood were French traders and explorers who journeyed along the river in search of new routes to China during the 17th century. By 1836, shorewood had 8 buildings and a population of just over 60 people. One of these early settlers, John Wirthman, opened a grocery store on West Superior Avenue which became one of the town's mainstay businesses until it closed its doors in 1959. Many pioneers who started settlements near present-day Shorewood came from eastern Illinois and other parts of Michigan Territory during this time period because creating towns and settlements was seen as an important part of Manifest Destiny for United States citizens looking to expand their territory westward into what are now Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma. In 1846, when Wisconsin became a state, many residents decided to move to Wisconsin due to its fertile land and cheap prices for land nobility could afford only one or two acres (0.4 hectares). Many more families followed suit over time as roads were built connecting surrounding farms with each other making it easier for farmers to sell their product directly to consumers rather than having it transported long distances by wagon train or boatloads across country. The town's name originated with founder Petershoren Cutler's desire for a "prominently situated place" where people would be able to see "the whole breadth and length of this great watery continent." One major development that took place in Shorewood during this time was its growing status as an agricultural center due largely to the efforts of local farmer George Wirthman Sr., who developed an extensive irrigation system that helped produce crops such as corn, beans, potatoes and apples year-round at locations throughout his farmstead including today's north side suburb Racine Heights. At Gander various industries produced war materials such as ammunition, rubber products etc.; while at USAAF Base Camp Kearny various engineering projects were undertaken such as constructing airfields underground including RAF Menzies there also functioned Naval Air Station Milwaukee (later Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach), later becoming US Navy Base Milwaukee; all while thousands upon thousands patriotic American troops served our country overseas! The area around present day Shorewood was occupied by the Menominee Indian tribe for several hundred years before white people arrived. The town grew quickly due to its location at the mouth of the Fox River and its role as an important junction for wagon road travel between Milwaukee and Racine. In 1847, shorewood had a population of fifty-five residents and became a village. In 1862,shorewood established itself as a city with a population of one thousand citizens. It became an important center for industry due to its location at the mouth of the Fox River and its access to transportation infrastructure. In 1933, Shorewood merged with Racine to form the City of Racine. Today, Shorewood is home to a range of businesses including two hospitals, four schools, nine churches and five restaurants.
