In 1856, a group of men from Shorewood built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River. The first permanent settlers in Shorewood were George and Mary White. In 1859, they moved to what is now the town of West Allis and began to grow crops. In 1865, they built a large mill on the river and started to produce flour, cornmeal, cheese, bacon, eggs and other items. In 1888, they constructed a larger mill which became known as the White Mill. The mills continued to be operated until 1993 when they were taken over by Kromer-Allis Corporation.
Shorewood is a town in the town of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The population was 5,251 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Shorewood were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived in 1836. They had been driven out of their original location by a strong wind that year. In 1838, George Washington Carver came to the area and started a flour mill which still stands today. In 1840, John Wetherbee bought land in Shorewood from the Carvers. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Shorewood after his home place near Mount Vernon, Virginia. The first post office was established inshore of present day North Avenue in 1846. By 1860, there were sixteen families living here with seventy one businesses and two churches serving them all. In 1870, the Milwaukee Road was extended through Manitowoc County and Shorewood became part of that railroad company’s village of operations (later called West Allis). By 1880 there were over 1,500 people living here with sixty seven businesses either affiliated with or directly supported by the railroad company. In 1907-08, Sears Roebuck & Co., Ltd., an American department store chain founded by Sam Sears began operating its first store in shorewood along First Street between Menominee Avenue and Walnut Creek Boulevard (now University Drive). That same year saw the opening of city hall located on present day East Court Street just east of downtown Manitowoc; this building served as both municipal offices until 1984 when it was replaced by county government headquarters which still occupies that building today. You can find many stores open late night along First Street including Kohl’s Department Store as well as JCPenney which opened its doors for business on November 15th 1959! Shorewood is a town in GreenBay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Shorewood was named for its location on the shore of Lake Michigan. Shorewood was founded by farmers in 1837. It became a borough in 1854 and a city in 1905. The current town boundaries were established when Shorewood annexed the neighboring towns of Hollandale and Arlington Heights. The first settlers to what is now Shorewood arrived from Illinois in 1836 and built their log cabin on the banks of the Kawkabeen River. They were soon followed by others, including Andrew Moulder and his brother Isaac, who built an adobe house on land that would later be called Moulder Place. In 1840, John Caulkins settled near present-day Harbor Springs with his family. By 1850, there were over twenty families living in Shorewood and its adjacent villages. In 1857, Jonas Sorenson sold 3 acres (1 km2) of land along the Michigan shoreline to provide access to Lake Michigan for shipping services needed to bring goods from Chicago into Green Bay during the early days of railroad development there. This parcel would later become known as Park Beach Drive or Shorewood Avenue due to its location close to where today's downtown stands
The town of Shorewood was founded in 1854 by Luther P. Wright and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after a cove on the Fox River that they saw while travelling. The Wright family operated a mill in the town until 1865. In 1872, the state of Wisconsin passed a law which allowed for township incorporation. Shorewood incorporation began on November 3, 1872. On February 15, 1893, another bill became law which allowed for village incorporation. On May 2, 1893, Shorewood Village incorporated and had its first meeting.
