During World War II, Shorewood played an important role as an assembly plant for aircraft parts production at Lake Michigan Naval Air Station (now Wright-Patterson AFB). The plant produced more than 1 million pieces of aircraft propellers alone during World War II; shorewood also manufactured ammunition and other war supplies from local mills while also serving as an interim storage site for planes after they were delivered from manufacturers overseas Afterward, many residents left their homes inshorewod for suburban neighborhoods throughoutMilwaukee County during the postwar decades although some remains remain within sight of downtown Oshkosh
The town of Shorewood was organized on February 14, 1837, by a group of settlers who arrived in the area from the east. The town was named for Admiral George Washington's ship, HMS "Shorewood", which had been lost off the coast of North America during the Battle of Lake Erie. The first post office was established in Shorewood on October 1, 1838. The first school in Shorewood was built in 1839. A Mechanics Institute opened its doors in 1840 and became a public school system in 1851. Shorewood experienced rapid growth following the opening of the Milwaukee Railroad to the town on April 12, 1854. Businesses grew rapidly because transportation was now available to many residents. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in Shorewood. -In 1862, shorewood became home to one of Wisconsin's first industrial plants when Pabst Brewery selected it as its new plant location for their new beer line. -In 1865,shorewood located one of Wiscones' largest manufacturing districts when it joined with other towns within what would become known as "the Great Western Federation." This union allowed for closer competition among manufacturers and helped spur economic development throughout western Wisconsin
