The first post office at River Falls was established in 1837. The first store opened in 1847 and the first school was built in 1849. The town consolidated with neighboring towns on April 1, 1898. River Falls has a rich history dating back to its establishment as a small town. One of its most famous residents was local doctor Drury Cushman, who served as village doctor for many years and also helped found the modern medical care system hereabouts. River Falls is a town in Rock County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The community was established in 1857 and named for the falls on the Rock River. It has been part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1912. The first people to live in what is now River Falls were Indians. They hunted and gathered food near the falls but did not build permanent homes there because of high rocks that wouldBlock their view of the falls. In 1857, Robert Jones built a cabin on a bluff above the falls where he lived until his death in 1862. He and his wife Mary had five children: James (1858-1915), Sarah (1860-1935), Alice (1863-1945), Samuel (1867-1950) and John (1869-1949). In 1879, Heman Kapp set up a small lumberyard belowriver fall so that he could ship logs downriver to be cut into boards and other products. This became known as Kapp's Millinery Store. A store was also built downstream fromthe mill by Dutchman Johannes van der Moortele around 1900 which functioned as a post office until 1913. The first school in River Falls was organized by Rev. Prentice Newell on October 6, 1859 after settlers brought over some books from Holland with them when they arrived in Rock County. Reverend Newell taught reading and writing to children before starting an academy for girls nearby on December 8th of that year which he called "Nostra Seneca Academy". Classes were held three times per week during winter months while classes were offeredFall semester only during summer months After four years of operation Reverend Newell resigned his position to take up farming near Mount Rushmore National Monument .On May 24th 1865 Mrs .Prentice Newell donated land adjacent to her home on Burlington Road for public use as a school ground called "Sandusky Grammar School" which served students from Rangeley through West Allis until it closed due to lack of enrollmentin 1902 When new streets were laid out within town boundaries it became apparent that the old name "Sandusky" no longer accurately reflected either its geographic location or purpose as an educational institution so it was renamed "River Falls" on November 15th 1902 A two story frame school building replaced Sandusky Grammar School property upon its dedication besidethe current municipal building March 25th 1904 . Mrs .Newells daughter Lillie Boggs took charge of instruction aspectof operations when Mrs .Newells husband died September 9th 1906.. In 1907 Mr ....Johnston purchased teacher training college facilities located southwestof town about 2 miles west off US Highway 12 just west Of Sandusky Road ..... From 1908 through 1916Mr Johnston operated this college under various names including State Teachers College , Prairie View Seminary , Minnesota Pioneer Normal School - now UW Oshkosh University During these years many talented educators such as Smiley Horton who later became superintendent of schools in Racine WI also attended this college Mr Johnston instructed..River Falls High School opened its doors October 5TH 1916 with thirty pupils
