River Falls is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, about 25 miles north of Green Bay. The population was 5,585 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the falls on the Racine River, which are located near the town center. The first Europeans to visit River Falls were French traders and missionaries in 1641-42. A fur trader named La Salle visited in 1763 and recommended that a landing be made at the falls so goods could be brought downriver to Green Bay from points east. On July 12, 1846, John Augustus Chisholm set out from Prairie du Chien with his four hundred men for what would become one of America's largest army campaigns of the nineteenth century—the Invasion of Mexico—and he called upon President James K. Polk for assistance against Mexican rebels led by Santa Anna. General William Sherman had also started operations against Mexican forces in Texas and Polk dispatched Sherman with two divisions to provide reinforcement for Chisholm's force at River Falls. When news arrived that General Chisholm was leading an armada upriver instead of marching into Mexico, Polk ordered Sherman not to march but to return home without attacking Mexico; this decision later resulted in public criticism from some Americans who saw it as evidence that American military might was being used too lightly against a conquered country On September 9, 1846–10 days after leaving Prairie duChien—Sherman's division reached River Falls after crossing the river on bridges built by George Armstrong Custer during his famous march through South Dakota Territory (now North Dakota) and Nebraska Territory (now Iowa). After disembarking his troops at High Bridge over the Racine River, Sherman marched northwestward along present-day Highway 39 until he reached Lone Rock Creek where he erected an observation post known as "Hogback Hill." He then began a sweep across present-day Wisconsin toward Chicago via Lone Rock Creek Valley and Two Rivers County before arriving at Chicago August 12th following a journey which consumed more than 420 miles " Hogsback Hill," shown here on US Highway 39 near Lone Rock Creek Damsite National Monument just outside of River Falls Village since 2007), became an important rallying point for Union soldiers during World War I due its commanding view over much of northwestern Illinois..

The River Falls area was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The town of River Falls was established in 1851, and it quickly became a popular tourist spot due to its beautiful waterfall and other attractions. The town was renamed to its current name in 1889 after the falls themselves. In the 1930s, factory production moved out of the area, which led to a decline in tourism until more recent years. Today, River Falls is home to a small community that retains many of the original features from when it was an important tourist destination.
The first settlers in the area that is now River Falls, Wisconsin were French men and women who arrived in 1763. The town was founded by Pierre Lacasse on the modern day western side of the river. The first school was built in 1768, and a post office was opened in 1807. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in the town. In 1836, the federal government erected a fort at what is now River Falls to protect against Native Americans trying to raid Upper Canada. The town had to come up with a way to make money from its military traffic. One idea was to build toll bridges over the river so that people could pay for passage across. Another idea was to create aSheboygan County bank which would offer loans and give credit cards as well as provide investment opportunities for locals. Neither of these ideas worked out, andRiver Falls eventually became an agricultural center with small businesses providing goods and services to their customers. In 1851, it became part ofWI under the terms ofthe Indian Removal Act signed by President James K Polk. The population of River Falls peaked at around 1800 in 1901 but slowly began decline until 1945 when it dropped below 1000 residents again
