River Falls is a small city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the lower Waukesha River. The population was 5,813 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is bordered by Waukesha County to the east, Racine County to the north, Ashland County to the northwest, and Oconomowoc County to the south. The town was founded in 1837 by refugees from Illinois who had lost their homes in a severe winter. The first settler in River Falls was Isaac Norris, who built a log cabin near what is now North Main Street. In 1847, Charles Fenton bought land at what is now South State Street and started to build a house called "Fenton's Fort". On October 7, 1849, Fenton sold his property for $200 to John Smeaton. Smeaton erected aLog Cabin at what is now North Main Street and named it "River Falls". In 1850s residents built several houses along what are now North Main Street and East State Street: "Fenton's Fort", "Winnipeg House", "Dalton House", "Lincoln House" and finally "Norris' Home". In 1852–1854 about 100 people lived in River Falls; however only 10 buildings were actually constructed due to lack of money or materials available at that time. In 1861 an actwas passed providing for election of township trustees which led to establishment of River Falls School District #2 with James Hines as its first trustee In 1865 when Waukesha County was organized it included most of present day Milwaukee county including River Falls Township . On May 1st 1870 Chauncey Ladd became local collector for sales tax for river falls township after Jno Wegman resigned from position

The River Falls area was first settled by the Potawatomi in the mid-19th century. It was not until 1847 that a post office called River Falls was established. In 1857, the town of River Falls was organized and soon became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful falls and natural scenery. The population grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century, reaching over 5,000 by 1920. By World War II, however, the community had shrunk to just over 1,000 residents. However, its dramatic history and unique attractions continue to draw visitors today. The first settlers in what is now River Falls were part of the Miami Tribe of Indians. They arrived in 1795 and built their homes on what is now State Street. The tribe suffered greatly during frontier warfare with other tribes and lost many members in battle. In 1827, they sold all their land within present-day River Falls to James Hickey for $8 per acre (about £1/$2). This transaction marks the beginning ofriverfalls's growth as a commercial center. Hickey quickly erected businesses including a sawmill and gristmill which he operated until his death in 1848; he also developed several small parcels of land around town which provided enough room for development without encroaching on indigenous resources (i.e., hunting grounds). By 1860, Hickey had become one ofRiverFalls's most successful landowners and operators; his profits helped finance various civic Improvements such as a schools system (1863), public transportation (1870),andthe constructionofa new courthouse (1875). In addition to these important civic investments,Hickey also aidedin developingthe local economy through his ownershipof numerous farms which produced goods such as wheat, cornmeal, bacon, butter and cheese; he also rented out portions ofhis properties for agricultural purposes or used themfor manufacturing purposessuchas becoming oneofthe earliest manufacturers of T-shirts at that time . As river falls grew increasingly commericalized throughout late 19th century it lost some if its industrial character although some remnants remain today including Hickey Park which commemorates him
The first white people to set foot on the Wisconsin River were French traders and missionaries in the mid-17th century. The river's current name, meaning " falls of the beautiful water" was given to it by Dutch settlers in 1642. In 1836, a group of farmers from Iowa started a stagecoach service from Chicago to Milwaukee. They named their new town after the falls—River Falls,Wisconsin.The first post office at River Falls was established in 1838. In 1846, an act was passed that changed Wisconsin's borders; part of it became Minnesota and part of it became Wisconsin. The name "Wisconsin" is still used today for both states. In 1897, a dam was built at Iron Mountain to power the Racine Canal. The canal linked Milwaukee with Racine and other towns along its length. The dam also created Lake Michigan which Today supplies most of Milwaukee with drinking water
