The first post office in Richfield was established on February 14, 1836, and was renamed to its current name in 1857. In 1916, Richfield merged with nearby Park City to become one municipality with a combined population of over 4,000 people. In October 2008, the City Council adopted an ordinance which banned smoking within 1000 feet (300 m) of any public building or park in Richfield. This ordinance came after complaints from residents about smokers inside parks and buildings such as library facilities and high schools. Smoking has been allowed within 100 feet (30 m) of most businesses since that time. According to the 2010 US Census there are 1,851 people living in Richfield Township; it borders Winnebago County to the south-east and north-west and Reedsburg Borough to the north-east

Richfield's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when it was first settled by German immigrants. By 1836, Richfield had a population of 50 residents. In 1857, the town was platted and became a village. In 1912, Richfield became an incorporated town. In 1970, Richfield amalgamated with neighboring towns of New Richmond and Menomonee Falls to form the city of Milwaukee.
