Richfield is a small town in the center of Wisconsin, about 20 miles from Milwaukee. The population was 5,000 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Richfield County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Richfield were Dutch farmers who went there in 1668 for supplies for their troops fighting in the American Revolution. In 1836, a group of Americans led by James G. Blanchard founded the town on land donated by John Davenport and others. The town was named after Edwinrich (now elmore) Richardson, an American lawyer and member of Parliament from Ohio who helped organize the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1867. Richfield had its start as a market place where goods were bought and sold by local farmers and traders. The first store was built in 1872, and soon other businesses followed suit including a bank, doctor’s office, Protestant church, schoolhouse, grocerystore and livery stable. By 1900, Richfield had over 25 businesses including several breweries which produced beer for local consumption or export to other states such as Michigan or Illinois. When World War I began in 1914, many factory workers left Richfield to join up in battle but few people moved into the small town afterwards because there was no need for them while production at those factories continued unaffected. However during World War II many people did move into Richfield because they saw it as an ideal location to set up camp near Lake Michigan while war raged around them across Europe. Afterward most people returned to their lives within the small community until suburban sprawl started moving into central Wisconsin starting around 1960-1962 when new homes were being built close to jobs that would bring families closer together with Highway 10 just two miles away so residents could get their shopping done without having to leave their homes

In 1836, John Sorenson established a sawmill on the Menomonee River, which became one of the largest in Wisconsin. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in Richfield. The town was incorporated as a village on November 15, 1872. On January 1, 1907 it became a city with a population of 362 people

The town was named for General Pierre-Antoine de la Fayette, who commanded the American forces in the War of 1812. The town's main industry was agriculture, but it also had a small population of lumberjacks and miners until the early 20th century. Richfield experienced growth during World War I, when it became one of the largest towns in Wisconsin. After the war, Richfield experienced a period of decline, starting with the Great Depression and culminating in the 1970s when its population began to decrease slowly due to suburbanization and other factors. However, recent growth has resumed and Richfield is now one of Wisconsin's most populous municipalities.
