In 1841, it became a village, and in 1865 it became a city. For many years, Richfield was an agricultural center with small businesses and families that relied on agriculture for their income. The town also had a strong gun culture because of its proximity to Minneapolis and the manufacture of firearms there. Guns were very important to these people and they enjoyed owning them. The population was 508 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Wisconsin and second-smallest city in Dane County after Milwaukee. It is also one of two cities in Dane County with a population under 100,000 people (the other being Appleton). The first settler to arrive in what is now Richfield was Levi Coffin on October 16, 1837. A post office called Richfield was established July 29, 1839, by George Sheldon and named for John Richardson who had come from Manchester, England that year. The railroad arrived in 1847 and helped make Richfield an important town. In addition to its role as a railroad town, Richfield became known for its production of maize and wheat crops which were exported to various markets around the world. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with many factories helping produce munitions for the war effort including Lewis Machine Works which produced tanks and aircraft engines; Ford Motor Company which manufactured jeeps; Wernham Hogg Paper Mill which made paper products such as magazines; and Welland Rubber Company which developed well rubber products used on farm tires etc. Following World War II, Richfield lost some of its manufacturing jobs but has regained some importance as a retail center thanks to new development areas such as the mall built near Interstate 94 and new housing developments along I-94 corridor such as The Villages shopping center anchored by Sears Canada Formerly known as "The Dells", this shoppingcenter opened in 2002 adjacent to Wernham Hogg Paper Mill site that had been abandoned since before that time due to environmental concerns about heavy pollution from manufacturing operations There have been efforts over recent years by developers who own or control portions of I-94 corridor area within or adjacent to Richfield Center Mall to bring light industrial activity back into the downtown core while preserving much of the parkland surrounding it This has resulted in mixed success with some projects resulting in increased traffic congestion while others have failed to create any real economic benefit despite claims by Developers that they will be able to reduce air pollution One potential solution may be for State government or local government partners (such as Milwaukee County) To help manage these problems potential solutions could include developing regulations limiting business hours within certain zones duringcertain times of day or banning single use plastic bags until 2020 As part of larger efforts related to transportation options withintowns like Milwaukee County there may need to be development plans put together targeting trucking routes betweenMilwaukee International AirportandRichfield
Richfield was founded in 1836 by John Rich and his wife, Sarah. The town took its name from the rich soil that lay near it. By 1870, the population had increased to over 1,000 people and Richfield became a manufacturing center for leather goods and other products. In 1915, the town renamed itself after George Walcott, an American statesman who helped lead America through World War I. walcott avenue is named in his honor.
