On October 1, 1841, copywright Ebenezer Hennepin sold 12 acres adjoining Rasmusens' lot to Jacob Pruisen for $160 cash which formed what would become known as Old Town Square today's downtown square (the original place name given to it when it was platted). On December 17th of that year two brothers named Lars Jensen and Peder Andersen bought 2/3 acre from Ebenezer Hennepin for $50/$60 cash giving rise to what is now Elm Street near State Street east of Center Avenue (now North Third Street). This location would be home to most of the early residents as well as later businesses until development happened along Elm street towards State Avenue where several homes were erected between 1870-1920 following plans developed by banker Nicholas Wilhelm Leininger Sr.. In 1865 Jesper Hansen married Elisabeth Klüver who came from Berlin Germany while working as an teacher at Racine Catholic school; they moved into a house located just off center avenue west side near present day Elm Street where they raised four children: Anna (1868-1951), Johanne (1870-1958), Erik (1872-1945) and Helle (1875-1969). They also served as parishoners at Stations Church until 1951 when they moved out because their children no longer wanted to attend services there after becoming disillusioned with religious dogma There are still descendants living in modern day Richfield who continue cultural activities such as hosting block party’s at various locations or playing musical instruments during annual harvest festivals

In 1845, Richfield became a territorial settlement within the United States. The town's first post office opened in 1850. It was renamed Richfield in 1872 when it became an incorporated town. The population of Richfield reached 9,000 by 1910. In 1912, the Richfield-Norwalk Railroad was built to connect Richfeld with Norwalk and other towns along its route. In 1916, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the city of Milwaukee as the capital of Wisconsin; however, this did not take effect until 1919. In 1925, Richfield erected a large statue of William Jennings Bryan to commemorate his victory at the 1924 Democratic National Convention from there.
