The Racine, Wisconsin area was first settled in 1836 and became a town in 1839. The Milwaukee & Michigan Railway was founded in 1847 and the town of Racine was incorporated on November 7, 1850. Racine is located in the southern Wisconsin region, at the junction of the rivers Menomonee and Racine. It was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795. The town was named after James Racine, an early settler. In 1839, Racine became a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad. The railroad left Racine in 1967 to be replaced by I-94. Racine has a rich history that can be traced back to its earliest settlers. James Racine founded the town in 1795 and it became a center of trade and industry for many years. His business ventures included carpentry and land speculation. Other early pioneers include John McLaren who built a log cabin near what is now downtown Racine in 1835; George Kapp who built a frame courthouse near today's High School Rd; Solomon Hickman who platted what is now Main Street in 1846; and Amos Tilton who laid out much of what is now north east side of downtown on land that he owned. In 1907, when Milwaukee was incorporated as a city, Racine seceded from its county and joined Milwaukee as an all-city municipality under Mayor George Ryan. That same year saw the opening of Park Hall Market which remains an important part of local commerce today. The city also constructed several impressive landmarks including Riverside Park (now home to Forest Preserve), State Fairgrounds (now home to Fishers Art Museum), Eastern Market (now home to Klein’s Chinese Grocery) and Waukesha County Courthouse Annex (now home to Waukesha County Court House). In 1969, when I-94 was completed through most of southeastern Wisconsin, Racine lost much of its importance as a commercial center with the departure of the railroad but retained its role as an important transportation link between Milwaukee and other parts of southeastern Wisconsinpurchasing land along I-94 for future development while maintaining some historic buildings such as Park Hall Market which remain prominent parts of local life today

Racine, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. The population was 72,521 at the 2010 census. One of the earliest European settlers was Frenchman Pierre Marquette who arrived in 1792 and named his new land "Racine". The first village founded in Wisconsin was Mayesville, located near present-day Racine. In 1836, Racine became part of the newly formed Milwaukee District and became an incorporated city on December 12, 1838 under Mayor John Fenton with a population of 781 people. On November 25, 1840, voters organized a new township to be called "Racine" after Captain Nathaniel Eells (1779-1854), founder and captain of HMS Dolphin which came to America in 1837 on behalf of Prince George Augustus III (later King George IV). Captain Eells had helped lead British forces against American Revolutionary troops during the Battle of Lake Michigan on July 8, 1804 while serving aboard HMS Victory under General Anthony Wayne. The town site was chosen because it lay between two rivers - one flowing northward into Lake Superior and another southward into Fox River - making it easy to trade goods with both countries. In 1846, Racine annexed parts of neighboring Kenosha County including Beloit which had become a city that year following its secession from Kenosha County.. In 1870s through 1880s much growth took place as local businesses merged or were bought by larger companies such as Jardin Brothers Brewing Company Limited., Kohl's department store chain,, First National Bank (), Waukesha Manufacturing Company ().
