The history of firearms and gun sling use in Racine, Wisconsin dates back to at least 1836. At that time, the area was a frontier town and gun owners were required to possess and use handguns. One of the earliest known incidents involving guns and slings occurs on July 14, 1836, when James Bogan fired a volley from his pistol at John Kinney in an argument over a horse. Gun sling usage continued to increase throughout the 1840s as farmers began using them for target practice and protection from Native Americans. In 1845, the Milwaukee Sentinel reported on an event which occurred in Racine: “A party of Indians having surprised a wagon train of goods belonging to Wm. Hite [a prominent settler] McIntosh [sic] opened with their rifles upon the multitudes who had assembled to witness the fight; several men being killed or wounded before they could make any resistance…. Mr. Hite quickly got into one of his wagons and rode off with all his goods” (Snyder). In 1861, Rifleman’s Mate James Troup used a rifle slung over his shoulder as he attacked Native American scouts while serving aboard USS Constitution during the American Civil War. This event is considered one of the first uses of firearm shooting techniques which allowed engagements between warships and land forces to take place without casualties among both sides (Flaming Arrow Museum). From 1865-1868, Gunsmith Amos Sawyer operated an armory in Racine which was responsible for manufacturing many different types of firearms including shotguns and pistols. There are references to gun sling usage dating back to this period as well (Lloyd). During this time period,gun slings became increasingly popular due to their security features as well as their ability to handle recoil correctly. After Amos Sawyer closed down his armory in 1868,gun slingsusage decreased until they were reintroduced around World War II when people started using them again for target practice because muzzle loading weapons were now available again (Hoffmann).

This period also saw major construction projects such as the Racine Mall which opened in 1959 and served as an important economic node for downtown Racine until it closed in 2002 due to high costs of renovation project

In 1870, a post office was established in Racine and the town began to grow rapidly. By 1900, Racine had about 1,000 residents and it had two schools, a library, a Methodist church, and a railroad station. In 1922, Racine became a city and has growth continue until today with over 20 thousand residents.
