Racine is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, and the seat of Racine County. The population was 108,711 at the 2010 census. The Racine metropolitan area had a population of 636,922 as of July 1, 2017. Racine is one of the most significant economic center in southeastern Wisconsin and has been home to many industries over time including shipbuilding and engineering; paper manufacturing; and agricultural production. In recent years it has become known for itsapswine production which began with Winery District wineries in Racine in 1984 and continues today with more than 20 wineries across Wisconsin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Racine were French traders on their voyage from Quebec to Lake Michigan in 1624-25. Jesuit missionaries arrived here in 1763 as part of Father Jacques Marquette's mission trip from Green Bay to find a route to China through the Great Lakes region. A fur trader named Nicholas Kapp set up shop here about 1800-1801 before moving on to Menomonee Rapids where he founded a trading post that became known as Kappstown (now Waukesha). early settlers included Peter Whitehead who built his cabin on what is now First Street south of College Avenue around 1825; John Auger who established an early mill on the east side of town about 1830; Elias Howe located a gristmill near Third Street north of College Avenue about 1835 ; Reverend Samuel Morse located his school at 451 Dearborn Road northwest corner Third Street about 1840 ; Andrus Babcock purchased land northeast corner Fourth Street and Dearborn Road about 1850 . In 1848–49, when Milwaukee was created as an independent city, Racine voted not to join it but did accept annexation by Milwaukee due theretofore being within its limits according to law rather than via referendum process under which all towns within Milwaukee's boundaries had the right to vote upon joining or remaining separate cities/units thereof. When Milwaukee annexed Racine proper in 1857, it extended its boundaries westward beyond those originally given to Racine by annexation statute so that present-day First Avenue runs between Cooks River Boulevard (now US Highway 41) on the east side and West Allis Boulevard (now I-94) on the west side - this alignment remains today even though both streets were once part of adjacent parcels owned by then-Racine Mayor Jens Ludwig until he sold them off in 2001 for $2 million (). In 1861 a fire destroyed much equipment used for training volunteers during American Civil War soldiers' encampment near present day Sawyer Point Naval Dockyard whereupon local farmers organized into "citizen's patrols" – also called "patrolmen" –to look after campers while they rebuilt their farms(). This effort eventually led directly toracines volunteer fire department being formed almost fifty years later (). During World War II many plants belonging variously to United States Automotive Corporation (UASC), Ford Motor Company (FMC), Youngstown Rubber Products Co., Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company (ACM), National Cash Register Company (NCR), International Harvester Co., Mack Truck & Equipment Inc., Sears Roebuck & Co., General Motors Corp., Chrysler Corporation etc.. produced parts needed for war production such as tanks, cars, locomotives etc.. One such plant was at 14th St./Wabash Ave.(now Apple Valley Mall) just southwest of downtown which operated from 1941 until 1945 when it was replaced by another plant at 15th St./Wabash Ave.(today’s State Fairground Drive). Other large plants closed during these years include NCR’s Arthur Loeb plant at 2nd St./Ewing Ave.; ACM’s Don Hoaglin facility at 7th St./Kane Rd.; FMC’s Schererville facilities at 5th Plank Rd./Norman Streets; GMC’s Oshkosh Assembly Line at 4500 S 250 W(); MckTruck&EquipmentInc.'s Oshkosh facility(then Brown Deer Yards)at 3100 S Clinton Ave.; SearsRoebuck&Co.'s Kenosha facility(then North Side Yard)at 3000 W Kenosha Rd.; ChryslerCorp.'s Dodge City Works complex(then Plymouth Park)at 2100 E Dodge Dr.; all operations stopped abruptly September 30 1945 because Ofthe end Of World War II Although few if any materials actually produced remain extant today consequently there are no records nor stories associated wit

Racine, Wisconsin was founded in 1834 by John F. Goodrich and his family. The village Sitka Point was named for the Sitka Peninsula, also in Alaska, which Goodrich had sighted on a New Year's Eve dream. The town site was selected because of its excellent harbor and its location near the mouth of the Fox River (now known as the Milwaukee River). There were several other sites considered but Racine emerged as a choice because it had two advantages: good transportation infrastructure and a rich cultural heritage. The first settlers arrived in 1835 and within a year there were eighty-eight people living in Racine. By 1838 there were three stores, twelve businesses, four churches and twenty-four families. In 1840 Racine had nine schools with grades one through eight; by 1845 there were twenty-seven schools with grades nine through 12. Racine’s growth continued apace throughout the 1850s and 1860s due to its strategic location at the mouth of two important river systems – the Fox River and the Menomonee River – as well as to its status as an agricultural center. This prosperity led to rapid development of both townscape and economy; by 1870 Racine boasted 1,500 residents, 100 businesses, 300 farms/livestock enterprises, 10 mills/textile factories and 5300 acres (2 km2) of land cultivated for crops or used for grazing purposes. During this time period some of Racine’s most notable entrepreneurs included J.P..Hickey (founder of what is now Hickey Furniture Company), George Kessler (founder of Kessler Glass Works), Wm Greenleaf (founder of Greenleaf Paper Mills)and Augustus Kelley ( founder of Kelley Rubber & Leather Works). In1871 Racine became incorporated as a village under state law #851; it had then grown to 2200 residents within five years! With so much growth going on rapidly outside the village boundaries things got pretty tight inside - racinesponse? Check! But that didn't stop progress from continuing apace either – by 1880 there were over 20 agencies providing services such as education, fire protection etc., all within easy reach for those who needed them! And that just wasn't all: during this same time period new headquarters for many local government organizations including school board office (#1 on North Main Street today), post office (#3 on North Main Street today), library (#4 on South State Street today) AND more…all within easy walking distance from each other! It couldn't be easier than that did it? Well actually not quite – but you get my point 🙂 A recent article about Racine reflects how our community has evolved over time: "When they first moved into their new homes in 1840 they probably thought their little slice of America would remain largely rural until fairly recently - when they started seeing evidence that something different was happening down at lake Michigan." Today "the [community] landscape has changed markedly," says resident Jeff Denton." With Highway 94 nearby Interstate 94 exits are now located just outside the core Village boundaries making commuting much easier than it once was" while downtown has seen significant redevelopment including an addition to Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church which opened up shop back in 2009 after being closed for many years
