It was founded by German immigrants in 1837 and named for John Augustus Port (1792-1881), a captain in the United States Navy who served as an ambassador to Germany from 1840 to 1843. The first post office in Port Washington was established in 1839, and it became a village in 1854. The village had a population of 313 in 1870, when it merged with the town to form Port Washington Township. The township had a population of 748 at the 2000 census. In 1959, Port Washington joined with Racine and Kenosha townships to form Racine County. In 1999, Racine County merged with Milwaukee County to become Milwaukee–Racine County.
The town of Port Washington was founded in 1848 by David J. Unseld and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the port on the Fox River where it first appeared on map. It became a small community with about 60 people when it was platted in 1851. The first store opened in 1852 and the first post office was established in 1854. In 1870, the population reached 100 people and the first school opened. In 1880, a railroad arrived and led to an increase in business and population. The town had a flour mill from 1889-1895 and a sawmill from 1895-1901; however, they closed both businesses after years of economic difficulties caused by the Great Depression. In 1932, Port Washington merged with neighboring towns Waukesha and Racine to form the city of Milwaukee; however, this merger did not take place until 1951 due to resistance from local residents who wanted their own governing body separate from Milwaukee’s.
