In 1876, Port Washington Vote #1 was chosen to be the site of what is now Milwaukee's first municipal election; due to its central location within easy walking distance for most everyone in town (and also because it would have been much easier for merchants and voters to meet), it quickly became one of Milwaukee's most popular voting areas. After decades of growth without any major development or infrastructure improvements until 1930–32 when work began on enhancing access to Interstate 94 through Menomonee Falls–the village voted overwhelmingly in favor of creating their own police department with jurisdiction over all aspects of public life including elections and street cleaning –the community increased its population size by 50% within five years!
