Port Washington is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,526 at the 2000 census. It is the largest community in Milwaukee County by population. The township of Port Washington was organized in 1836 and named for Captain John Porter of the U.S. Navy's USS Constitution which docked there during the first decade of that century.The first settler in what is now Port Washington was James Tilton who arrived on a boat from New York City on November 9, 1838. He built a log cabin and came to live here after migrating from Vermont some sixty miles east of Milwaukee [1] In 1839, Isaac Stevens (a contemporary of Tilton) erected a two-story frame house on what is now First Street NW in Port Washington Township. Stevens became one of the earliest settlers in what today constitutes Milwaukee County and he donated land to form the nucleus of what would become Port Washington Township. In 1840, President Polk dispatched Colonel John Sibley as military governor of Wisconsin with orders to explore new territory west of Chicago[2] On July 1, 1840 - just three weeks after General Order No. 4 had been issued establishing US Military District No 2 - Sibley discovered Fort Dearborn[3], an early fur trade post located about 20 miles northeast of present-dayPortWashington on Menomonee River,[4] while traveling through northwestern Wisconsin on his way to open up new land to settlement under US Army auspices[5]. At Fort Dearborn were stores, barracks and outposts for 10 men garrisoned by Native Americans known as the Winnebago; this fort served as intermission between Detroit Lakes National Forest headquarters northwest of Green Bay[6] and present day Deerfield Beach outside Racine.[7][8][9][10] On July 24th 1840 - less than two weeks after discovering Fort Dearborn - Sibley reported back that "the Indians have no fixed home except atFort Dearborn" but added "I believe they will soon remove thither"[11],[12]), Toward this end Colonel Sibley ordered Major George Armstrong Toomer (1806-1889) commanding 3rd Battalion Michigan Infantry Regiment stationed at nearby Prairie View A&M University (now Prairie View Hills), to lead an expedition against these Winnebagos with instructions "to kill all they can find".[13],[14],[15][16] The expedition reached stagecoach roadstead nearpresent dayWaukesha where it met up with Captain Samuel Morse's party enroute from Stonington Center via White Earth Lake across Swift Current Pass into Superior National Forest — one stop before reaching Point Wilson Island off Point Wingate — on September 6th 1840[17]. Thereafter Captains Morse and Robert Stephenson established Post #2 at Waukesha Junction about 12 miles southeast from present dayWaukesha along stagescoach route leading southward past Waukeesha village then turning east towards Green Bay; it continued service until discontinued 1865 when private land acquisition within national forest boundaries made it impossible for posts west thereof to continue operation or reach passengers/mail beyond point called “Nebraska” due southwesterly extension into Point Wingate Peninsula – so effective October 15 1870″ [18],[19]} Captain Samuel Morse received Congressional Medal Of Honor for providing leadership during expeditions against Winnebagos led by Major George Armstrong Toomer

In 1916, four men working for the Milwaukee Light & Power Company built a dam on the Fox River to power their engine house and other works near present-day Port Washington Elementary School. This site became known as "The Dam". The company discontinued its operations in 1922 and alluvialfill began arriving at The Dam which raised water levels so that power could be generated again until 2006 when it was replaced by an electric plant In 1946, port warrenty expired on one of the dynamite plants owned by Milwaukee Corporation; this led to an agreement between local businesses and government to rebuild/maintain all dynamite plants with new detonators made specifically for apple orchards in order to extend warranty periods past their original expiration dates
