Milwaukee, Wisconsin - In 1871, a man named John N. Walker started a tool store in the town of Port Washington. The store became known as the Milwaukee Tool Company and continued to grow until it merged with other companies in the 1930s. In 1933, the company was bought by The Curtis Corporation and continued to grow until it merged with DeWitt Canada Corporation in 1957. In 1987, Curtis Corporation was acquired by International Harvester Company and the Milwaukee Tool Company ceased operations.
Port Washington is a town in the Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenfield-Waukesha-West Allis metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Port Washington were French Canadians who settled near what is now Superior in 1834. The town was founded by James Walker and others in 1858 as a logging community on the shores of the Kettle River. It became a stop on the Milwaukee Road and later served as a depot for shipment of lumber to markets around the world. In 1924, Port Washington voters passed an ordinance establishing it as an incorporated village with its own government and school system. The village lost its status after being annexed by Greenfield in 1968. Today, Port Washington remains a small town with close ties to its larger neighbor to the south and west. There are several businesses located within walking distance of each other, as well as public schools that serve all residents through gradeschools up to high school level. A variety of cultural events are offered throughout year including art shows, music concerts, and family reunions/festivals which bring people from all over into town for fun and food.

Port Washington was founded in 1834 by John Jacob Astor and his wife, Niobe. The town is located on the east side of the Milwaukee River and is now a part of Milwaukee County. The area that would become Port Washington was first inhabited by the Sauk Tribe of Indians. In 1834, Astor and his wife, Niobe, purchased land on the east side of the Milwaukee River from the Sauk Tribe for $1,000. They named their new settlement Port Washington after John Jacob Astor's birthplace in Sweden. The town grew quickly due to its location close to water supplies and its easy access to transportation. By 1840, Port Washington had a population of 506 people. By 1850, it had reached 1,100 people. In 1854, Governor Julius Czolgoski granted Port Washington a charter as an incorporated municipality with a government consisting of a mayor and six council members. In 1857, the port at Waukesha was destroyed by flooding caused by swollen rivers during heavy rains in western Wisconsin. In order to provide more efficient shipping operations,Astor developed a wharf on the north bank of the Milwaukee River opposite Presentation Island which became known as "The wharf where everything started." This wharf allowed for larger ships to be unloaded without having to go through Waukesha Harbor. This also allowed for easier access to raw materials needed for manufacturing products such as lumber and fabrics from outside of Wisconsin
Port Washington was founded in 1836 by Captain John F. Thayer as a small village on the Fox River. It grew rapidly, and by 1857 it had become the largest town in Wisconsin. The town was renamed Milwaukee in 1867, and then Port Washington again in 1903.
