Port Washington is a small town in the United States. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Racine metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Port Washington was John Fritchey in 1827. He and his wife, Sarah, founded a log cabin on the east side of the Wabash River. A post office called Prairie du Chien was established in 1833, and a store opened in 1840. In 1847, John Fritchey bought land on the west side of the Wabash River from Peter Ziegler for $500. The town started to grow rapidly after that; by 1860, it had a population of 454 people. In 1865, Port Washington incorporates as an incorporated village with a government defined by Village Charter No. 1 (dated May 25). That year saw some significant changes within Port Washington: First were two additions to the village: George Whiteacre bought 10 acres on the south side of Wisconsin Avenue for $100 and donated it to Port Washington; and Charles Swenson purchased 3 acres north of Whiteacre for $40 from Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University. These were among many early settlers who helped make up what would become one ofWI's most vibrant communities during its formative years—a time when Milwaukee's rapidly growing city limits were still expanding outward into rural areas like PortWashington

In the 1890s, Port Washington experienced significant growth due to the influx of new immigrants and their families. Many new businesses were established in the town and it soon became one of the most thriving villages on the Great Lakes region. In 1916, Port Washington was renamed after Mount Pleasant Township (now Racine) in honor of Rear Admiral George H. Armstrong, Jr., Commander-in-Chief U.S. Fleet at Sea during World War I

The town grew quickly and by 1860 it had a population of 350 people. By 1870, Port Washington had a school, post office, and church. In 1875, the port opened to traffic and by 1910 it was the largest seaport on the Great Lakes. In 1916, Port Washington became a city and today it has a population of over 10,000 people.
