The first European to visit Port Washington was Jean Nicolet on May 25, 1763, during his second voyage through what is now Michigan Territory. He named it for Pierre- Marie- Jacques Conte, a French general who had fought in North America during the Seven Years' War and as a result was given an estate near Marquette, Michigan by King George III of Great Britain. The town began to form around 1847 when settlers from eastern Illinois moved into Chippewa County and started farming land that they had bought along the Fox River. The first post office was established in 1851; it became known as Racine because most of its residents were farmers who owned orchards and vineyards thereabouts. In 1862, Port Washington received its own school system under Act No 8 of 1862 which created public schools throughout Wisconsin except for those within municipalities with their own school systems (such as Racine). In 1892, Port Washington annexed the village of West Allis which then served as its municipal government until 1974 when that municipality's annexation into Milwaukee made West Allis an official city with its own government separate from that of Port Washington According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.
