In 1847, the first gun shop in Port Washington was opened by John C. Brown and his brother Amos. They built a Shop on the corner of Main and State Streets. The shop continued to be run by Brown until 1855 when he moved to Appleton. In 1857, Henery J. Smith opened a gunsmithy on the south side of town. In 1865, Solomon Aiken organized the first armory in Port Washington and began manufacturing arms for local militias. By 1889, production at the armory had increased to such an extent that it required its own building on State Street. In 1903, Edward Gorman started making rifles at his store on Third Street. The company became known as Gorman-Bryan Rifle Company after 1919 when it merged with another rifle company named Gorman-Lorraine Firearms Manufacturing Company which also made shotguns and pistols under one roof on Delaware Avenue in Port Washington from 1922 through 1945). After World War II, most of Gorman-Bryan’s manufacturing activities shifted to other towns in Wisconsin but some firearms still remain today including revolvers (Gorman-Lorraine handguns), shotguns (Gorman-Bryan Shotguns) and pistols (Gorman-Lorraine Pistols). The current owner of Gorman-Bryan Firearms Manufacturing Company is Samuel Ritchie who purchased it from Edward Gorman’s widow Alma Lorraine in 1984.

The first rifle in the town of Port Washington was a shotgun. The first rifles were shotguns and pistols made by George W. Brown, one of the founders of Port Washington. In 1847, Captain John Fenton handed down his collection of arms to the townspeople after he died in battle with General David Hunter at Green Bay. Most of these guns were used for hunting and stock removal on the port side of the river. In 1855, an armory was built on High Street in town to commemorate Captain Fenton’s collections. This armory served as the center for all gunnery operations in town until 1917 when it was moved to North Park where it is still used today as a museum. In 1865, John Dye started making rifles out of walnut which quickly became popular in Wisconsin due to its light weight and accuracy. He also built a pistol factory which produced many handguns including both revolvers and pistols chambered for different calibers including shotshells, rifled muzzleloaders, and Sharpsburg Rifle Model 6 cylinders (all six rounds). Port Washington is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,657 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo Grove–Port Washington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European tosight Port Washington was by Father Marquette on May 4, 1673 while accompanying explorer Jacques Cartier on his voyage from Quebec to Detroit. On July 14, 1835, John Fitch established a trading post and store at the mouth of the Fox River in what is now Port Washington. A post office was established there on August 1, 1836. The town site was surveyed by Capten John Winthrop in 1846 and named for Peter Witt (1681-1759), an early settler in that area who had been captain of one of Captain James Watt's boats during the fur trade between Great Britain and North America. According to the United States Census Bureau, Port Washington has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The village core lies within what became PortWashington proper; most of this area was annexed by Buffalo Grove in 1959 as part of a larger effort to consolidate all villages within Door County into one government structure—an idea that had originated with then-County Executive Charles Sorensen but never materialized. As a result of these acquisitions (and others made throughout Door County during 1958 through 1962), much of ruralland located east and south of Interstate 94 has since become part as well—including much land bordering Lake Michigan including present-day Harbor Springs and Whitefish Bayou north thereof as well as much swampy country lying east and west of Interstate 94 between Appleton and La Crosse townships; all this terrain forms today’s eastern border both with Buffalo Grove to the east and with Manitowoc County to the west. A few years later, a park was constructed on land donated by George Hinton. In 1916, a large water tower was erected in Port Washington to provide water for municipal use. The town experienced significant growth during World War II when many businesses were closed due to wartime limitations on resources. After the war, portions ofPort Washington became part of Green Bay while other portions remain within Milwaukee County today. In 1957, an addition to the city limits was created with the name of Appleton – which is still used today as part of the city’s moniker – after Appleton Brewing Company (now MillerCoors) made its first purchase from local entrepreneur Eunice Weems at that time along with two other breweries*.
