Port Washington is a small town in the Wisconsin region of the United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It lies on the east side of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Milwaukee. The first Europeans to visit Port Washington were French traders in 1607 and 1608. They named it "Portsmouth" because they thought it resembled Rochefort on the English Channel. In 1834, General John Cranch explored and mapped this area and named it after his friend, Governor Samuel Latham Dodge of Michigan Territory. Port Washington was platted in 1835 by James Fenton as part of a survey for becoming a town on Lake Erie. The village was incorporated as a city in 1959. As of the 2010 census, its population had risen to 2,060 people. The economy is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing also conducted here; however, more recent growth has been in services such as transportation and healthcare-related businesses such as medical clinics and dentists'. From humble beginnings as just over 100 people living near an existing post office operated out of two log huts on land donated by Nathan Sennett, Port Washington has grown into one of America's most vibrant downtowns – home to local restaurants, nightlife venues and cultural attractions including both art galleries and performing arts organizations – all within reach from any point inside or outside the community.

In 1865, Port Washington became a city under the name of Milwaukee after Milwaukie, Oregon, which had been annexed into Milwaukee as part of District 2 following their merger into Wisconsin Territory. In 1967, when Milwaukee County was created and merged into Wisconsin State government, Port Washington reverted back to its original name although it still appears on many local documents and signs throughout town today. According to the United States Census Bureau, Port Washington has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 9,724 people residing in PortWashington Township: 5,827 (78%) male and 4,649 (22%) female; 3 families (2% each) lived below poverty line; and 1 family (0% each) earned less than $10/week according to 2000 census data.>>
The town of Port Washington was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1854. The town quickly became a center for the lumber industry, with mills located at the confluence of the Milwaukee and Racine rivers. In 1907, the town annexed neighboring village of Richfield.
