Port Washington is a town in Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the Fox River near Green Bay. Port Washington was founded in 1854 by John Fenton and his family as a stop on the Great Western Railroad. The town motto is "An evergreen town." The first mention of Port Washington appears to be from 1857 when it was called Pontoise Meeting Place because of all the pontoons that were being built there at that time. In 1865, Fort Snelling was established in what is now Monroe County and its garrison included some men from Port Washington. At this time, both towns were part of the same government but had different leaders until 1867 when they became separate municipalities under their own governments with John Fenton as their first mayor. Fenton's son-in-law, David French started farming in Port Washington in 1851 and soon had a large farmstead which he offered for sale to anyone who wanted to visit Green Bay or Milwaukee during those months without having to go through Chicago or other points on the Great Western Railroad. He also made trips down river every summer bringing back goods for local consumption such as flour and bacon to sell at his store before returning home during winter months when he would keep the store open using sleds pulled by horses pulling wagons filled with goods back and forth between Milwaukee and Green Bay. The first school building in Port Washington may have been built around 1840 by Moses Brownell who used an old fortification known as Fort Snelling Barracks which he constructed on land donated by Captain Daniel Houghton about two miles east of present day Main Street just north of where Whitefish Lake meets the Fox River They taught children Indian sign language which helped them learn English more effectively while still living among natives rather than strangers like themselves).
