By 1984, both Port Washington and Madison had lost much of their population and were considered museum towns by most locals. Today only a few remnant buildings remain from these once thriving communities- most notably The Old Post Office building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Port Washington was founded in 1844 by Peter and Mary (Lorimer) Smith as a landing place for the stagecoach route from Green Bay to Milwaukee. The town grew rapidly, with a population of 3,000 in 1860 and 10,000 by 1880. In 1896, Port Washington became the county seat of Racine County. In 1933, Port Washington was renamed after John F. Kennedy because he had been born there and had spent much time in the area while growing up.
