In the early 1800s, Port Washington was a small town in the Fox River Valley on the north side of Milwaukee County. It was a stop on the stagecoach route between Milwaukee and Chicago. At one time, it was also an important center for firearm manufacturing. The town's arsenal and gunsmith shop were located in what is now the United States Post Office building. The first firearms ever made in Port Washington were pistols and rifles used by local militiamen to resist Native American attacks during the 1812-1814 Wisconsin War of Independence. Many of these weapons still exist today, including a rifle that is exhibited at the Milwaukee County Museum. In 1836, John J. Pershing founded Pershing Arms Company in PortWashington,Wisconsin; this company became one of America's leading firearms manufacturers during World War II with its production of armaments such as fighter planes and tanks. In 1967, Pershing Arms merged with Colt Firearms Company to create Colt–Pershing Corporation (CPC). Today, CPC manufactures ammunition and handguns under several brands including Smith & Wesson®, Sig Sauer®, Beretta®, Glock® and Takata® products

The Port Washington Rifle and Shotgun Association was formed in 1892. The organization was originally known as the Port Washington Rifle and Shotgun Club. In 1903, the club changed its name to the Port Washington Rifle and Shotgun Association. The association continued to be active until 1943 when it merged with the Wisconsin Firearms Federation.
Port Washington is a small town in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. Port Washington was first settled by German immigrants in 1847. The first store and post office were established in 1851. In 1865, John Pohlman moved to Port Washington from Racine, Wisconsin and started a grocery store there. Henamed his business Pohlman's Market after himself and his father-in-law, Elisha Pohlmann (1801-78). The town rapidly grew during the late 19th century due to its location on the Fox River between Green Bay and Milwaukee; its thriving economy supported early industrialists such as Jens Jensen (1853-1921), who founded Jensen & Bohlen Piano Manufacturing Company; Cyrus McCormick (1835-1920), founder of McCormick Harvester Company; and others involved in agriculture, railroads, manufacturing, banking, health care services and other industries. By 1910 Port Washington had become one of the most prosperous towns in Dane County with a population of 2,473 people. During World War II it played an important role as a supply stop for military supplies moving through the region; some 822 businesses were operated by local residents during that conflict. After 1945 many residents chose to move away from rural establishement towards larger cities like Milwaukee or Chicago because of advances in technology that made life easier including television sets and refrigerators becoming affordable and air conditioning becoming available throughout much of America within 10 years! In 2000 Port Washington had an estimated population of 1,992 but declined to 1,904 at the 2010 census due largely to declines in agricultural production which has been impacted by global trends with lower commodity prices making it difficult for farmers to pay their employees competitive wages while still providing necessary services such as crop insurance
