Port Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the north side of the Port Washington Peninsula. The population was 10,549 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Port Washington was made by United States forces during World War II as part of their effort to secure access to Lake Michigan for naval use and create a base from which they could bombard Tokyo. After the war, many farmers moved into the area and began growing corn, wheat, potatoes, apples and other vegetables; however, it was not until after Prohibition that this industry truly took off in Port Washington. As drinking water became increasingly scarce in areas such as Milwaukee due to lead contamination from factories then being built near the lakefront, people turned to fresh water supplies for their needs and started using port wagons to bring water from wells deep within town limits where it was available without charge or damage from rain or shine. In 1948, residents petitioned for incorporation and were successful in getting it granted; however, only five years later when their city hall burned down they had to rebuild again under new leadership which included Mayor James Prentice who spearheaded efforts to attract businesses andeconomic development to Port Washington while also becoming one of its most vocal proponents including open-air concerts at local beaches during summer months which drew tens of thousands of visitors each year – something that still occurs today thanks in large part to his work with Chamber music events scheduled throughout these months Aldermen John Hickey (D)and Don Tipton (R) were instrumental in securing passage of a bill making port wagons taxable property real estate which led directlyto an increasein business activity as entrepreneurs saw an opportunityto make some extra money while still living close enoughto enjoy all that Milwaukee had to offer even if they didn’t have access troughtownsites like those found within downtown .

Port Washington is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, situated on the Fox River between Milwaukee and Waukesha. The population was 12,000 at the 2000 census. It has been the county seat of Racine County since 1836 and it is now a part of Milwaukee County. The first European to see what became Port Washington was Pierre Marquette in 1634 when he explored what is now Milwaukee County for fur traders. Marquette's mapmarked "Wisconsin" as his route north from Michilimackinac and this early notice encouraged French settlers to establish claims along the Fox River valley as early as 1763 when Robert Treaton founded Logansport on the east side of the river near present-day Waukesha. In 1836, Racine County was organized from parts of Milwaukee and Waukesha counties and Port Washington became its county seat with its current boundaries. The first post office in Port Washington was established on February 8, 1837, by Joseph Cavanagh with Post #1 at his farmstead just south of present day Racine Avenue/Route 54. In 1840, Isaac Hurd opened a general store in what is now downtown Port Washington which continued to be open until 1957 when it burned down due to an electrical short circuit necessitating replacement parts for automobiles imported from Germany during World War II (see also: Fire that destroyed downtown Port Washington in 1957). In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson delivered an address entitled "The Significance of Our Great Lakes Region" before a group including representatives from across America at Ford Motor Company plants on Dearborn Heights Boulevard in Detroit Michigan which included future Governor George Romney who later became Senator from Massachusetts.. In responding to Wilson's remarks, local citizens gathered several blocks away where they erected a large American flag atop an old mill shaft - becoming one of only two communities in America to do so outside major cities during that time (the other being West Bloomfield Township NJ).
