The first American ammunition company to be established in Port Washington was Samuel Colt’s Manufacturing Company, which began making firearms and cartridges there in 1853. Ammunition production continued to grow throughout the late 19th century, and by 1910, there were over 10 companies producing ammunition in the town. During World War II, Port Washington became an important munitions manufacturing center as it became home to two of America’s leading armaments manufacturers – United States Military Munitions Corporation (USMEC) and Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester). Both firms produced artillery shells and other munitions used during the war. In 1945, USMEC merged with Bethlehem Ordnance Company to form United States Producers of Gunpowder and Cartridge Products (UPGP). UPGP continued producing ammunition until 1994 when it was acquired by BSA AG. At present, UPGP is a subsidiary of Bellsouth Group Inc., one of the largest telecommunications providers in the world. It is part of the Racine–Kaukauna, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by James Wainwright and other settlers from Ohio as a post office on an island in the Fox River. In 1856, Port Washington became a township with a Population of only 403 people. By 1870, however, it had grown to 1,819 residents and by 1880 it reached 3,481 residents. In 1896, Port Washington incorporated as a city and has since grown rapidly into one of Wisconsin's most populous cities with over 11 million residents today! Muzzleloaders eventually became popularized during World War I when rifles were being fielded on both sides of the conflict. By using these firearms with muzzleloading cartridges, soldiers could fire more shots per minute than they could with handguns or rifles relying on reloading time instead of firepower per shot. In addition, muzzleloading cartridges allowed guns such as the Winchester Model 1895 Rifle to be fired rapidly from long ranges without having to load each shot manually like handguns did at shorter ranges

Port Washington, Wisconsin is a town in the Ozaukee County of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,288 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Port Washington were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1836 and named it "Forsyth". The town's name comes from a small stream that flows through the town. The first school was built in 1842 on land donated by John Pomeroy. In 1865, Port Washington became one of sixteen towns incorporated as Racine County. On November 1, 1967, Racine County merged with Milwaukee to form Milwaukee-Racine County. On January 1, 1975, Port Washington became part of the newly created Ozaukee County when it merged with neighboring towns of West Allis and Watertown. According to the United States Census Bureau, Port Washington has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,972 people,[2] 724 households,[3] and 688 families residing in the town. The population density was 573 people per square mile (225/km²). There were 806 housing units at an average density of 248 per square mile (104/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White.[4] Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0%of the population. There are 724 households out of which 31% had children underthe age OF 16 living with them,, 44% were married couples living together,, 12% had a female householder with no husband present,, and 54% were non-families.. Port Washington was founded by Captain John Jacob Astor in 1839, after he bought land on the Chicago River. The town became a railroad center and grew rapidly until it reached its peak in the late 1800s. In 1907, Port Washington was named one of the ten most important municipalities in Wisconsin.
