Pluver is a town in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. The name "Pluver" is derived from the Potawatomi word "pwauveh." The first European to visit Plover was Jean Nicolet in 1774. A post office was established in 1836 and called Prairie du Nord. In 1854, the name of the town changed to honor General George Washington Plummer, an American general during the Mexican–American War who had fought at Buena Vista and Coronado. The town originally consisted of only a few homes. The first store was built in 1857 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law Amos Hovey. By 1870, there were 10 stores and 100 residents in Plover Township. In 1912, plows were first put into use on farms in Plover Township and soon became common elsewhere in Marinette County as well because of their usefulness for farming surfaces such as dirt roadsides or ditches where horses could not go due to snow cover or high water levels.
