Plover is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,698 at the 2000 census. It lies on the east side of the Androscoggin River. The first settler in Plover was Abraham Flint in 1841. The town was platted in 1855. A post office called Plover was established in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1905. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,698 people, 527 households, and 388 families residing in the town. The population density was 26 people per square mile (10/km²). There were 624 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population. There were 527 households out of which 33% had children underthe ageof eighteen living with them, 49% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37% were non-families. 31%of all households were made upof individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 yearsOf age or older. The Plover community was founded in 1853 when Daniel Freeman and his wife, Sarah, moved from Ohio to a farm at the corner of State Street and Fifth Avenue in what is now the city of Milwaukee. The first settler on the Freeman farm, John Noble, died in 1854. By 1861, four families had moved into the town: The Sheehan family, the Copley family, the Goodell family and James Whitehead. In 1865, when Wisconsin became a state and Plover became its capital, Samuel Morse donated land for a university. Mining operations occurred during Plovers’ golden years starting in the 1870s but soon stopped because of competition from other towns in Wisconsin that had access to more reliable water supplies. Today most of Plovers’ businesses are connected with agriculture or fishing; some have been around since beforeWisconsin began legalizing gambling in 1959. In 1927–28 an agreement was reached between local farmers and representatives from breweries including Anheuser Busch (then known as Soma) to set up a cooperative farm system that would provide milk for grocery stores throughout Wisconsin. That same year saw the founding of what is now UW-Milwaukee by students fromPlover who met at their school auditorium to decide on their next step after being expelled from one earlier college.). As time passed new businesses cropped up such as Wausau Glass Works which manufactured windows for homes until 1978 and then shuttered its doors; Grosse Pointe Paper Company which made paper products until 1984; Applebees restaurant which opened its first store in 1987; Wernham Grange Methodist Church which has been serving food services since 1951; Sears Roebuck & Co., Ltd., which built a factory here starting processing raw materials for textiles before moving production offshore beginning 1966.; AARP Life Insurance Company which opened its first office here in 1979.; And finally River Hills Development Corporation (the company now known as OneNorthwest) located here since 1974 responsible for developing highly desirable properties such as Rivers Edge Golf Course/Residence Club just across US 41 northbound off I-94 near Milwaukee—all within walking distance of downtown! Today many descendants still live close to home while others commute long distances each day into larger jurisdictions like Madison or Chicago for work or pleasure activities outside their community limits
