Ammunition history in Plover, Wisconsin dates back to 1892. The first ammunition store in the town was founded by J.C. Hennessey and his wife, Emma. Ammunition was not available locally so Mr. Hennessey sent specimens of various types of rounds from Illinois to Revier Arsenal in France for testing purposes. In 1903, a new ordinance was passed that authorized the purchase of ammunition by individuals for their own use only. This led to the establishment of the Armoury and Gun Store Company which began selling ammunition commercially in 1905. By 1907, there were three ammo stores operating within the town with an total population of around 100 people. The town's first post office opened on February 14, 1907 and served until it closed on September 3, 1912 due to a fire that destroyed most of the town's timber buildings. The present day Post Office building was built subsequent to this time and serves as Plover's primary civic center today. The Plover area of Wisconsin was first settled by the Chippewa people in the mid-19th century. The community of Plover, now located in Dodge County, was founded in 1853 by James A. Plover and his wife, Lilla. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and easy access to transportation. In 1912, Plover became the capital of Dodge County when it was organized from parts of La Crosse and Milwaukee counties. The town continued to grow until the 1940s, when it lost its importance as a commercial center due to population growth in neighboring towns. Today, Plover is a small agricultural community with a few stores and a school district. PlOVERSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT was established on March 14, 1907 by order of the State Legislature after an act had been passed providing for the creation of such a school district. On that date (March 14), Waukesha School District #2 merged into PLOVERSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT #1; both districts were then composed of schools located within Dodge County only. From 1907-1966, one change took place within PLOVERSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT #1 - on November 2nd (following a consolidation vote) James A. Plummer resigned from his position as President and Vice President of the Board Of Education effective December 1st because he had reached the age at which he could no longer serve without pay as Director Of Schools for Dodge County; this action created another seat on the Board which went vacant until January 1st 1967 when Life member Milton Sessler resigned from office effective February 15th after serving two terms without interruption due to death or resignation pending appointment). On November 2nd (following a consolidation vote) James A. Plummer resigned from his position as President and Vice President of the Board Of Education effective December 1st because he had reached the age at which he could no longer serve without pay as Director Of Schools for Dodge County; this action created another seat on the Board which went vacant until January 1st 1967 when Life member Milton Sessler resigned from office effective February 15th after serving two terms without interruption due to death or resignation pending appointment). Beginning with year 1969-1970 there were three members elected each year instead of one so that all positions would rotate annually through election rather than having one person hold all seats throughout their term (Jared Brower being elected Chairperson/Vice Chairperson during those years). Through education efforts spearheaded by Superintendent Drue Ziegler over many years including beginning Breakfast Club program for 4th graders in early morning hours starting back in 1984 we have seen great strides made & continue today with our current PreKindergarten students
The Plover family came to the area in 1848 and started a farm on what is now the south side of town. In 1861, they moved to their current location on North Side Street. The Plovers were involved in politics and did some good things for the town, like building a school and establishing a library.
