The Plover community is located in the town of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and it was founded in 1851 by John H. Plover and his wife Julia. The town was named after Captain James Cook's ship, the "Plover", which went down on her maiden voyage in 1792. In 1868, the men of Menomonee Falls organized themselves into a business society called the National Commercial Bank. This bank became one of the most important banks in Wisconsin during the early 20th century. The bank purchased land on which to build its first building in 1922. The current building was built between 1951 and 1954 and it is one of the largest commercial buildings in Menomonee Falls. In 1847, the town of Plover was organized. The first post office was established in 1849. In 1868, the first school was opened in the town. In 1886, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town. A store and hotel were built in Plover in 1906. The plow factory was founded in 1912 and a cotton gin was erected in 1916.
