Pleasant Prairie is a small town in the town of Appleton, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,153 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Appleton-Kenosha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Pleasant Prairie was George Brandt who arrived in 1838. He and his wife, Catharine (née Kapp), started a gristmill on the east side of town and later built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A post office called Pleasant Prairie was established in 1841, and it remained in operation until 1918. In 1857, James Haughton bought land near present day Pleasant Prairie from John Fetterman for $2 per acre. He built a sawmill there and began to trade goods with other towns in the area. In 1865 he sold his mill to Amos Prentice who operated it until 1922 when it became known as the Prentice Saw Mill Company. The mill closed down but reopened again in 1984 as the Amish Village Shop #1 & 2 which still stands today). In 1881, Isaac Sorenson settled around present day Niceville on some land that he had acquired from John Bealow during their cattle drive from Minnesota to central Wisconsin . He built an early farmstead here which remains active today as Pleasant Prairie Historical Society Museum . Sorenson also donated over 100 acres (40 hectares) of land to be developed into what is now Pleasant Prairie Park . The park opened to the public in 1904.. Spencer Wirthman came to America about 1840s and founded Wirthman's Mills hereabouts where he manufactured flour for local markets including Milwaukee and Chicago He died unmarried about 1850 leaving behind large family estate valued at $250,000 dollars Today's Wirthman's Mills Complex includes five buildings dating back to Spencer Wirthmans childhood days: one twin-story adobe building withLoggia ceiling; two story frame barn; three story frame house; four story frame addition/renovation circa 1916 - 1948; two stories gabled Tudor Revival style brick structure west wing circa 1915 - 1923 w/ stone trimming); three stories gable roofed wood framed singlefamily dwelling circa 1900s;and two stories shingle roofed wood framed multiplefamily dwellings pre-1900s (one example of several such structures extant withinPLEASANT PRYOR village limits). ames Vining came overland via Illinois about 1840s settling near present day Green Bay His son Augustus immigrated around 1860 settlement nearpresentday Kenosha This man erected new buildings hereabout 1870 called "New Beginnings" In memory of his father Nels Vining pioneers have named one street after him principles livingston avenue ).
