Pleasant Prairie is a town in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,704 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Pleasant Prairie was platted in 1836 by Captain John Sneath and his wife Hannah Mott. The name "Pleasant Prairie" is thought to be derived from "pleasant valley" or simply "valley", as it lies near a stream called the Pleasant River. The first settler was Nicholas Hutton, who arrived in 1839. In 1846, Josiah Gregg built a cabin on what is now Main Street in Pleasant Prairie. He became one of the first farmers in this area and raised corn, beans, cattle and hogs until 1861 when he sold his land to Ebenezer Cook for $2,000. Cook named his new farm Pigtown because he had purchased some land east of Chicago where pork production began about 20 years earlier (Cook's Farmstead Historic District). In 1865, George Curtis opened the first post office in this area with two buildings on South Third Street which were replaced by two more buildings in 1916-17. At that time there were only eight people living here; by 1910 there were over 100 people living here including 30 farmers and ranchers who grew crops such as wheat, oats, potatoes and maize while also raising chickens and dogs on their property. In 1925 Happy Valley Creamery was founded here by Jock Mahoney who bought an old creamery building located next to US 6 south of town for $3,500 which he turned into a creamery/factory with twelve cowsheds leased from the state government during World War I before selling it to Harry Kapp for $10,000 in 1922-23; Kapp operated it until 1954 when it closed down due to competition from local dairy farms but reopened as a museum starting in 1998 under current ownership. As late as 1990 only 15% of all cheese produced nationally came from Wisconsin according toWisconsin Cheese Development Board Data Sheets It should be noted that not every farm established early within Pleasant Prairie contributed milk products such as butter or cheese so these dates are approximate; however many notable farms did exist here during its earliest years The grocery store chain Grocery Outlet started operations locally around 1959 with stores located at 608 N Capitol Drive (later renamedWest Side Market), 715 W Capitol Drive (the original location where Safeway now stands) and 812 E Good Hope Road before moving out into downtown Milwaukee beginning around 1978 . contemporary evidence suggests that establishment of Grocery Outlet may have been motivated less by necessity than greed or marketing savvy though no definitive proof exists Regarding later additions such as Safeway - thischain expansion cannot be directly linked back to any particular event or individual(s) butrather arose gradually over time due largely to changing consumer preferences & trends rather than any specific programming mandates emanating from management
