Pleasant Prairie is located in the town of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, about 26 miles west of Milwaukee. The community was organized on April 12, 1836, and named for Colonel John Pleasant, a British officer who had been instrumental in developing the area. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in wagon trains from Illinois and Michigan. The community grew slowly until 1880 when it became an agricultural center with a population of 100. By 1920, the population had declined to 60 and by 1990 it was only 20. However, the community has experienced significant growth since then and now has a population of over 350 residents. The history of Pleasant Prairie is reflective of the regions it occupies. It is part of the Driftless Area which includes parts of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin; this area has for centuries been home to Native Americans as well as European colonists. In 1830, Wisconsin Territory was created from portions of Minnesota Territory and within it was Mukwonago County which included present-day Pleasant Prairie. In 1836, Captain James Fenton surveyed all land within present-day Mukwonago County including that belonging topresent-day Pleasant Prairie while he was serving as military governor of Indiana Territory under General Anthony Wayne. On April 12th, Colonel John Pleasant organized a settler's colony at what is now known as Pleasant Prairie after hearing about Fenton's survey from his friend David Healdsberry. At first there were only 10 settlers but they soon larger groups arrived until by 1838 there were 120 people living in what would become Mukwonago County proper. When Indiana Territory entered into statehood in 1848, Mukwonago County became Racine County because its territory overlapped that granted to Racine by the state government for free black citizens who had lived therein before 1840 (see Racine Borough History). When Milwaukee received its city charter in 1860, it merged with Racine County so that all county officials were appointed by city hall rather than elected like those in other counties at that time (see City Hall Administration). After Milwaukee's annexation into the city limits in 1916 (see Milwaukee Municipal District), most county offices moved out into municipal buildings which continued until 1972 when they were transferred back to county headquarters on State Street (seeCounty Headquarters Administration).
