In 1836, a surveyor discovered an Indian village near present day Pleasant Prairie and called it "Pleasant Prairie," after his home town in France. In 1855, Isaac Newton Pratt founded the Pratt Institute in Milwaukee and opened its doors to students from around Wisconsin including those living in Pleasant Prairie. He donated land for school construction on what would later be known as campus map row - now University Parkway - just north of the current city limits. The institute's first building was completed in 1861 when classes began for young men aged 14-18 years old. A second building was added during World War I and became known as School Building 3 (now Administration Building). In 1925, Charles Wickersham organized a group of farmers who wanted to create a new community near Marshfield which they named "Pleasant Prairie". The name stuck and today's city boundaries were defined by Wickersham's original platting: east side of Saginaw River between Racine Road (now Hwy 169) and Askew Avenue; west side between Marshfield Road (now I-94) and Union Pacific Railroad tracks; south side along Racine Road (now Hwy 169) to intersection with Askew Avenue; north side between I-94 & Marshfield Rd
Pleasant Prairie is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.4 square miles (92.6 square kilometers), of which, 33.5 square miles (91.3 square kilometers) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 square kilometers) (0.14% of total area) is water.[1] The first Europeans to encounter what became Pleasant Prairie were French fur traders in 1665 when they explored what is now Racine County[2]. The first permanent settler arrived in 1836 when James Hennepin erected a farm on the site of present-day Pleasant Prairie.[3][4] A post office called Pleasant Prairie was established in 1839,[5] and remained so until it was discontinued in 1907[6][7][8], although an early variant name for the town may have been "Pleasant Valley".[9] The current name comes from John Law's 1830 map of Wisconsin as published by his son John Law & Co., Incorporated Territory No 2—now Racine County[10]: "Pleasure Valley" means "pleasant valley". As one result of rapid population growth over much of the 19th century, Pleasant Prairie experienced significant infrastructure development including schools, churches and Masonic lodges; fire engines; public works such as ditches, drains and streetlights; and an expressway connecting Milwaukee with Racine and other towns across central Wisconsin during this time period.[11][12][13] However, many aspects of these days' community remain relatively unchanged from their Pioneer Days counterparts: aonewomen primarily responsible for most day-to-day tasks within households while menfolk engage in heavy labor outside the home; strong familial ties continue to define social life - even among those who no longer live near one another]; small-town feel remains throughout - residents typically know everyone else within200 yards or so.; longtime residents are often well known to one another through family history or acquaintanceship

Pleasant Prairie had a library from 1870 to 1886. The population of Pleasant Prairie declined during the 19th century because of various factors such as overpopulation and disease outbreaks that struck the area. However, by World War II, there were growing economic opportunities in nearby Racine and West Allis which led to an increase in the population of Pleasant Prairie. By 2000, the population of Pleasant Prairie had increased to 9,000 people
