Platoteville is a small town in the town of Platteville, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–New Berlin metropolitan area. The platteville post office opened in 1839 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler in Platteville was James Wills who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1838. He named his new land "Platteville" after Frederick Augustus Washington (1763-1846), the first United States president and general during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A post office called Platteville was established at this location on November 10, 1839, and operated until July 1, 1907. In 1851, John Cramer settled near where Platteville now stands and started to grow corn. In 1861 he erected a log cabin which served as a stable for his farm animals. In 1865 he built a frame house which still stands today as one of the few remaining structures from that time period in town. By 1870 there were about twenty settlers living in PlatteVILLE."

Platteville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the eastern part of the county and along the banks of the Missouri River. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. The name means "plain" or "flat land". It was first settled in 1847 by immigrants from Illinois and Minnesota. The town and itsECK were organized as a village on January 1, 1871, by combining portions of rural towns of La Crosse and Ashland. On July 1, 1907, it became an incorporated town under the name of Platteville. The population reaches 10,000 today but declined to 9,717 at the 2010 census due to natural decrease (births minus deaths). In 1847 there were only four settlers living in what is now Platteville: John & Nancy Haigh; Edward Cook; Solomon Hildebrandt & family (husband & wife); all lived on a farmstead called Prairie Farm which had been purchased from Peter Kapp by Jameson & Co.. In 1861 when platting began for this area there were over 50 people living here including 30 farmers and their families plus 10 soldiers from Fort Snelling garrison who barracks were built near where present day State lot 4 meets County line Road A2 east of town on private land owned by George Wickenheiser (1813-1892) – one mile north side of current State Line Road A2 off US Highway 11 – these troops being used as guard duty while platting took place which included building road ditches around present day Town Center Street gridlock caused during construction work days before traveling west on Highways 8&9 took them across County Line Road A2 just east of current State Line Road A2 with lots still being platted until they got too close to Settlement spot 3 miles SW corner present day Wickenheiser property currently known as North SideLot 4 off Highways 8&9
Platteville was founded in 1848 by General David Rice and his son, Colonel James Rice. The town was named after the Platte River which flows through the area. The community was first built on a small farmstead and later developed into a small town. By 1870, the population of Platteville had reached 1000 people and it grew rapidly during the early 1900s. In 1907, the city of Platteville was incorporated and became one of the most important cities in Wisconsin. During World War II, Platteville played an important role as a military base for Wisconsin troops. The town also experienced some growth during the 1990s due to its status as an agricultural center. Today, platteville is a vibrant community with many businesses and cultural attractions
