In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected president of America; when he took office he ordered Surveyor General James Harriman to prepare a map of America which showed all major settlements existing except Chicago with their respective boundaries set out at right angles to those shown on Harriman's original map including Platteville whereupon Lincoln ordered Harriman "to endeavor immediately to have this village platted". A plat showing this boundary appears dated January 17th 1862 which is still extant but has been lost over time due to theft from local museums). In 1863 John C Platt donated 160 acres (65 hectares) of land known today as Main Street between Menomonee Falls Road and White River just east of present day Platteville Elementary School site making it one of only two grants ever made for townland development specifically within a municipal boundary!
