Platteville was founded by Captain James Kapp in 1834 as a small trading post on the Platte River. The post was later renamed Kapp's Landing after Capt. James Kapp's grandson, who developed it into a town and served as its first mayor from 1840 to 1848. In 1863, Platteville became part of Wiscones County when it was organized out of parts of Racine and Milwaukee Counties. The city limits were expanded in 1895 to include all of eastern Green Bay except for unincorporated areas near La Crosse and Superior; this included most of what are now East Grand Forks, West Allis, Plattsmouth, Mequon and Fitchburg counties. The town grew rapidly duringWisconsin's Machine Age due to its location on major transportation routes connecting Green Bay with Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul, Minneapolis-Saint Paul and other cities across America. Platteville, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,628 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Platteville was John Fitch, who arrived in 1838. He built a cabin on the bank of the Menomonee River and named it Fitch's Camp. The town started as a small farming and trading settlement until about 1890 when manufacturing began to take hold in what would become known as "the Quad Cities". In 1902, platting began for what would become Platteville with land purchased from Hennepin County by manufacturer Edward Laughlin and his wife Jennie Mills (1858-1924). The name honor Dr. Augustus Cushing (1836-1920), one of the original settlers in Platteville who had helped lay out Milwaukee County along its current border with Illinois before coming to America in 1852. The early growth of Platteville was due to its location between two major transportation arteries: State Road 14 and Interstate 94 which linked Chicago and points westward through Minneapolis, St Paul, Duluth, Fargo and other cities during the 1920s Shopping Mile Boom; and Wabash Avenue which connected downtown Milwaukee with suburban villages such as Racine, Kenosha and West Allis via an expressway called I-94W or "The Beltline." In 1954, when US Highway 20 became accessible from WI 45 south of town proper (exit 6 on I-94W) many businesses moved away from their original locations on State Road 14 because they were closer to highway access than they were to their customers or employees - much like today's businesses located within Closeout Mall Drive or 5th Street South near Miller Park where I-94E meets KFQX/Ustream TV stations Fox 27 & MyNetworkTV station WCVB&CW 38). After years of discussion over whether or not to build a bypass around town center (which would have eliminated State Road 14 altogether), voters decided that no bypass should be built due to concerns about potential traffic congestion caused by high volume highways exiting/entering town center onto residential streets adjacent to business districts; instead WABASH Avenue Boulevard was widened northbound from exit 6 towards Business Loop 12 Rd/State Road 7E & Spur 8N after being rerouted off US Highway 20 concurrent with I-794W concurrent with KFQX/Ustream TV stations WCVB&CW 38 just east of downtown Platteville . Today most people refer to this project as " widening WABASH" rather than simply "widening WABASH" since there has been little change since then other than added shoulders & enlarged median strips on both sides of freeway entrances making it more difficult for drivers entering & leaving town center
