Platteville is a small town in the town of Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–St. Paul Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Platteville was John Fritchard in 1846. platteville was named after General James Kapp’s estate near Fort Snelling, Minnesota Platteville was laid out by Isaac Brockman in 1847 on land that he and his brother had bought from the Laclede brothers. The village rapidly grew as fur traders and farmers arrived to homestead around it. By 1860, platteVILLE had a store, a blacksmith shop and about thirty buildings including a log schoolhouse which served as a courthouse for many years until it burned down in 1877. In 1865, when Racine County was created from portions of Milwaukee County, Platteville became one of its villages and continued to grow until it reached its current size of 2,711 residents (2010) One reason for the rapid growth may have been due to an influx of immigrants during this time: Poles settled here beginning in the late 1840s; Germans followed soon afterwards; Irish also landed during this time period; Chinese arrived starting in the early 1870s; and Italians began arriving during World War II .

Platteville is a small town in the Fox River Valley region of northwest Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,919 at the 2000 census. It lies along the eastern border of Monroe County and the western edge of Racine County. Platteville was founded by Major General James K. Polk in 1836 as a station on the Illinois Central Railroad. The first settler in Platteville was George Aiken, who arrived in 1830 from England with his family. Aiken named his plat "Platteville" after his home town of Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. In 1854, settlers from Iowa City built a mill at what is now downtown Platteville to produce flour for local markets. The mill closed in 1865 and was replaced by a sawmill soon afterward. In 1871, John Littell platted land near present-day downtown Platteville and built a log cabin called "The Log Cabin". He operated it until 1886 when he sold it to Charles Wiman. Wiman ran a grocery store and general store in downtown Platteville until 1916 when he bought out Charles Hutton's interest and incorporated the business into his own company, C&W Grocery Company Ltd., which continued to operate until 1918 when it merged with Armour Meatpacking Company to form International Harvester Corporation (IHC). IHC moved its corporate headquarters from Minneapolis to Omaha in 1957; its last day as an independent company was December 31, 1987. In 1955, Southeastern Wisconsin Electric Cooperative organized as an subsidiary of IHC; that year Plattstown Road Power Plant opened at what is now northeast corner of First Street and Elm Street (now east side of First Street between Elm Street and Main Avenue). That same year also saw the opening of Town Lake Parkette Shopping center on present-day west side of First Street between Elm Streets and Main Avenues; that site had been previously occupied by Town Lake Pool which opened in 1934 adjacent to Town Lake Recreation Area on north side of town lake (now south side), providing swimming & recreation opportunities for residents throughout central Wisconsin including those living near PlatteVILLE! In 1966 IHC purchased all shares outstanding in Milwaukee shipyards owner/operator Pembroke Shipbuilding Corporation for $1 million; this purchase helped initiate IHC's move away from steel production towards aluminum production beginning that year with its new Alcoa Steel Works facility just outside Chicago Heights on Clybourn Ave., later renamed ArcelorMittal Aluminum USA Inc.; see photo below left showing place where today's Alcoa Place facility stands! The Platteville area was settled by early European explorers in the late 18th century. The first white settlers arrived in 1792, and platted the town of Platteville on a farm that had been granted to them by the French government. The platting process involved meeting with Native American leaders and marking out what would become the town's boundaries. The town developed slowly until it became a busy agricultural center during the late 19th century. In 1905, platting of new towns through farmland east of Platteville began, and by 1907, all of present-day Platteville had been platted. The growth of the community was helped by its location at one of Wisconsin's major transportation hubs, providing easy access to both land and goods. During World War II, Plum Creek Ammunition Plant was located in Platteville and produced munitions for troops serving in Europe. After the war ended, the plant closed down and many jobs were lost as a result. However, over time, some residents have started to revive interest in this locale as a destination for historical attractions or shopping opportunities.
