The railroad started construction in October 1855 and arrived at its final destination on December 14, 1856. The plat of land for what is now Platteville was located near the mouth of the Des Plaines River. The town site that is currently occupied by Platteville was founded in about 1800 by trader Pierre Chouteau and his wife Hélène de Villebois-Chouteau. The Chouteaus were originally from France but came to America in 1785 as part of a trading expedition led by Jean-Baptiste LaPorte. In 1855, the town site along the river became known as “Platteville” after General David Dixon Platt, who served as Minister Resident at Washington City during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1865, General Robert Ewing Curtis took over command of Ulysses S. Grant’s forces in Mexico and decided to move westward into Texas where he thought there would be more open country. He ordered his army to cross the Rio Grande north of Matamoros and move south toward Ciudad Juárez before being driven back across it by Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna almost immediately following their crossing. In retaliation for this defeat, General Curtis burned all but 2 miles (3 km) of the $2 million+ infrastructure project called “The Great March” which linked Ciudad Juárez with El Paso County – an event that remains commemorated annually with a parade through downtown Paso Robles called "Lucha Libre en el Paso" or "Rambo's Fury at Juarez".
