Platteville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Platteville County. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name "Platteville" originated from Missouri Territory (1836-38), when land that would later become Platteville was ceded to Illinois by Mexico in 1846 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The plat for this town was filed on November 12, 1851, by John Wills and James Fenton, two men who had come to America from England as settlers. They named their new settlement after Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Laclede de la Salle, one of the participants in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). La Salle's expedition had explored much of what is now Nebraska and Kansas before his death in April 1847 near what is now Topeka, Kansas. In 1858, violence broke out between small farmers living near Platteville and those who built a log cabin on Big Black River where Platteville now stands. A mob quickly burned down several homes and businesses before being dispersed by officers with orders not to hurt any innocent citizens or animals. This event is known as the Battle of Big Black River Bridge which took place on July 2, 1858. In 1865, during President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation all slaves in Missouri were freed; this also applied to slaves in Iowa and Illinois north of the river because these states were part of Maryland until January 1st 1861 when they became Chicago territory under General Scott's command following his victory over Reuben Butler at Peoria on October 15th 1862). On December 5th 1860 Isaac Newton arrived from Quincy Township WI with his family settling near Platoeville along Big Black River about 4 miles south east of present day Platteville according to some sources but others claim he settled about 7 miles due east near present day Atwater Mills just east off US Highway 20/RTE 21 . Platteville is located in the town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The community was founded by two brothers, John and Samuel Platte. The plat of land that would become Platteville was purchased in 1847 from the Saukamee Sioux tribe. The plat was sold to settlers for $2 per acre. By 1860, over 200 people lived in the community. In 1865, a school was built and named after Mrs. Clementson (Mrs. Hurlbut). It served the town until 1902 when it became a private school known as Maplewood School. In 1922, a new church was erected on the plat of land that would later become Platteville Township. The property currently houses several homes and businesses including a dental office and restaurant called “The Grapes” which opened in 1975.
Platteville was founded in 1836 by George and Laura Mayhew. The town was named after John C. Platte, a Union general who fought in the American Civil War. The Mayhews owned a sawmill and gristmill in the early days of the town, but they gradually lost their land holdings as the community grew. In 1854, settlers from Illinois arrived and began to build homes in Platteville. By 1870, the population had reached 350 people. A post office was established in Platteville in 1877, and it operated until it was discontinued in 1925.
