The Platteville Valley was named for the Platte River which flowed through it. The region was first inhabited by the Menominee, Potawatomi, and other Native American tribes. In the 1800s, settlers began to arrive in the area and build homes. By 1900, platting had occurred and there were many small towns in the valley. In 1923, a group of men from Platteville founded their own bank. This bank is still active today and has provided financing for businesses in the valley since its inception. The valley also saw heavy industry during World War II with numerous factories located here including Boeing Airplane Company and United States Steel Corporation. After the war, much of this slowly died out as technology took over and most manufacturing left town for Asia or other countries. The community began as a small settlement on the banks of the river in 1855, when Wm Halsey plat tiled his farm land along the river. It was named for General John A. Platte (1786-1863), who had served with distinction under President James K. Polk during the American Civil War and afterwards played an important role in growing wheat and other crops near by. The first post office was established in 1857, and plat tiling continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1900. By then, many farmers had left for better opportunities elsewhere in what would become Milwaukee County; however, some residents stayed to keep their property and continue plat tiling until1972 when it stopped entirely due to fire damage. The early settlers were Quakers who had migrated to what is now Wisconsin in the mid-18th century as part of a religious revival movement called Second Great Awakening. In 1847, platter pioneers John Sorenson and Elias Cady built a log cabin on the east side of present-day Platteville Lake near where it currently stands. They named their settlement after General George Washington's home county, Virginia (now West Virginia). Their cabin stood until 1886 when it was replaced by a new store and post office building that still stands today on Main Street in downtown Platteville (named for local pioneer James H."H" Platt). From 1847 to 1861, Platteville was also known as "The Pits". In 1862, following US troops' victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Antietam Creek (), General William Tecumseh Sherman named this area "Sherman's Landing" after him. After nearby Menomonee Falls became too easily accessible by wagon journey or river ferry trip for most people during this period, Sherman ordered his Cavalry Unit to build an earth rampart around what are now Menomonee Falls Park and Fort Atkinson State Park (the only remaining evidence from Sherman's occupation) in order to keep residents away from these falls; doing so helped preserve one of America's largest natural resources during this time period! During World War I(), many citizens served in various branches of the military including: infantry officer training unit 'The Big Red One'; tank destroyer squadron 'Red 12'; artillery battalion 101st Airborne Division; medical detachment 6th Army Service Hospital ().
