Platteville is a town in Washburn County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,631 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1854 by Swedish immigrants. It is named after General James K. Polk's father-in-law, John Charles platte. The first settler in Platteville was Peter Andersson who arrived there on July 12, 1854. He and his family were the first to reside in what would become Platteville Township. In 1860, David Rasmussen settled there and started the first store in Platteville. By 1862, many other settlers had followed David into the township and soon it boasted a total of twelve stores and two churches. Over time, more businesses became established in the community including a schoolhouse (1864), post office (1865), grocery store (1910), livery stable (1920) and millinery shop (1925). In 1882 the Railway Commission awarded a contract for the construction of a railway from Ramsey to Evanston which passed through Platteville along its route today known as State Highway 627A. The railroad helped spur growth within the community with new residents being attracted to its facilities such as hotels and shops while also providing transportation for local farmers and businesses alike
