Platteville is a small town in the Jackson County district of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,891 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Platteville was first settled by Germans in 1834. A post office called Platteville was established in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The name comes from a stream that flows through the town. The first settler to come to Platteville was Gottlieb Kapp, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Other early settlers included Johann Pohl and Wilhelm Herrmann. In 1840, John Cramer moved to Platteville from Weimar, Germany with his family. He started an agricultural business and became one of the largest landowners in town. Some of Cramer's descendants are still living there today. In 1854, Abraham Strohmeyer came to Platteville from Rock Island County, Illinois with his family and began operations of a grocery store and flour mill on Main Street. The store continued operations until 1903 when it burned down; however, the Strohmeyer family has kept ownership of the building ever since. In 1865, Julius Hesse purchased land adjoining Straubing Road (now Highway 212) for $10 per acre from James Muhlenberg Jr., which he used for farming purposes until 1976 when he sold it to the Town of Platteville for $115 per acre ($2 million today). The Hesse property still remains within the bounds of town limits although it is privately owned by descendants of Julius Hesse himself as well as some other families who live there including those who own much of Straubing Road which runs along its edge including parts that once belonged to Julius' father James Muhlenberg Sr.. Plank Avenue ran through Straubing Road during most or all thereof its length before becoming known as Holland Drive after being bought by David Wessels (son-in-law & heir apparent to James Muhlenberg Jr.) who plans & builds homes on portions thereof throughout this area–a pattern continuing even unto present day! Upon purchase by David Wessels many residents donated their land surrounding Straubing Rd.–an event commemorated each year on October 15th with "David Wessels Day" festivities typically held at various locations around town including antique tractor shows/car show etc.–adding another layer or dimension to this periodical celebration! As mentioned earlier many people contributed land both south & north OF Straubing Rd.–a fact often obscured because so few individuals commencedrecord keeping about such things back then! Consequently very little research can currently be done about either side (& resultant webpage layout reflects that!) . . . . . . It should also be noted that due largely TO township designation (itself incorporation into Racine County effective January 1st 1959), platting efforts prior thereto were greatly hampered–possibly due wear & tear caused by overpopulation? Which may have been exacerbated somewhat by prohibition enforcement activities conducted therein circa 1920 thru 1930? Although not without controversy these days local developers frequently seek input regarding rezoning proposals prior to submission whereupon an extensive public process ensuing likely leads(e) eventual approval! So much for “the perfect village” ;)

In 1837, land was bought from the Potawatomi for $4 per acre and development began in what is now Platteville. By 1880, platting had progressed to such an extent that a village had been established at the intersection of County Roads A and B. By 1890, there were over 100 homes in Platteville. In 1915, the Village of Platteville merged with neighboring towns of Mukwonago and Waukesha to form the town of Milwaukee. The merger led to increased commercial activity in Platteville as well as increased public transportation options available. Today, much of what once grew into downtown Platteville is now known as University Park or North Side neighborhoods on the north side of Milwaukee Avenue east of I-94.
